"Here 🧠 Your Brain Has a Lymphatic System Too — And It Drains While You Sleep

Understanding the Glymphatic System & How It Shapes Your Mental, Emotional, and Neurological Health

💡 Did You Know?
For over a century, scientists believed the brain had no lymphatic system.
But in recent years, groundbreaking discoveries revealed not only one—but two—ways the brain drains waste:
1. The Glymphatic System (fluid-clearing system inside the brain)
2. The Meningeal Lymphatic Vessels (lymphatic vessels around the brain and skull)

Together, these systems form the neuro-lymphatic pathway—a critical detox network that affects everything from memory to mood to neurological health.

🧬 The Glymphatic System Explained

What It Does:
• Clears toxic proteins like amyloid-beta and tau (linked to Alzheimer’s)
• Removes oxidative stress, metabolic waste, and inflammatory debris
• Delivers nutrients, immune cells, and hormones to the brain
• Regulates fluid pressure around brain cells

How It Works:
• Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flows alongside arteries into the brain
• It exchanges with interstitial fluid, picking up waste
• The waste then drains out alongside veins and into lymphatic vessels
• It exits through lymph nodes in the neck and into the body’s main drainage ducts

😴 It Works While You Sleep

Your glymphatic system is 90% more active during deep, non-REM sleep.
When you’re deeply asleep:
• Brain cells shrink, creating space between neurons
• CSF flows in, washing out waste
• Your brain gets a “night-time rinse cycle”

If you don’t sleep well, your brain doesn’t detox well.

🧠 Meningeal Lymphatics: The Brain’s Newest Pathways

Discovered in 2015, these real lymph vessels line the membranes around the brain.
They:
• Drain CSF and immune cells
• Interact with your immune system
• Link brain health to systemic inflammation

They exit through the deep cervical lymph nodes—the same ones targeted in lymphatic drainage therapy.

🚨 Signs Your Brain Isn’t Draining Properly
• Brain fog and forgetfulness
• Morning headaches or eye pressure
• Puffy face, scalp, or eyelids
• Ringing in the ears, dizziness
• Neurological flares (MS, migraines, post-concussion)
• Anxiety, overwhelm, or mood swings

🔄 Hormones & Brain Drainage
• Melatonin triggers glymphatic activity (deep sleep = deep clean)
• Cortisol (stress hormone) blocks deep sleep and constricts flow
• Poor lymph = hormone imbalance = worse sleep = worse drainage

Hormonal conditions like PCOS, menopause, and thyroid dysfunction can all impact brain detox.

🌿 How to Support Your Brain’s Lymphatic System
1. Prioritize Deep Sleep
• 7–9 hours
• Avoid screens before bed
• Use magnesium, glycine, or lavender
2. Sleep on Your Side (Left Preferred)
• Helps CSF drain via the thoracic duct
3. Stay Hydrated Early in the Day
• Dehydration = thick fluid = poor CSF and lymph flow
4. Breathe Through Your Nose
• Deep belly breathing pumps CSF and calms the nervous system
5. Lymphatic Therapy (MLD in Neck & Clavicle)
• Opens drainage points for brain fluid
• Reduces puffiness, pressure, and fog
• Best done post-concussion, post-viral, or during inflammation
6. Release Fascial Tension
• Craniosacral therapy, neck stretches, gentle mobility
7. Castor Oil Packs on Neck or Upper Spine
• Softens tissue, improves circulation, reduces pressure
8. Avoid Mouth Breathing & Jaw Clenching
• These block fluid outflow from the head

✨ Final Thoughts

Your brain isn’t just thinking — it’s constantly detoxing.
But it can’t do that when your drainage system is blocked, your sleep is shallow, or your lymph is sluggish.

The glymphatic system is the bridge between mental clarity, emotional resilience, and long-term neurological health.

Let it flow, and you’ll feel the difference — in your thoughts, your focus, your moods, and your entire sense of balance."

Effect of a Craniosacral Therapy Protocol in People with Migraine

Some research, evidence, facts... 🧐📈🖋📒📋📊

Today I would like to share with you an abstract from the survey taken at University of Valencia in 2022. 🇪🇸

"Abstract
Background: Migraine is a common neurological disorder, and it is the second leading cause of disability worldwide. Manual techniques based on physical therapy have been proposed to improve migraine aspects(...). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a craniosacral therapy protocol on different features in migraine patients.

Methods: Fifty individuals with migraine were randomly divided into two groups (n = 25 per group): (i) craniosacral therapy group (CTG), following a craniosacral therapy protocol, and (ii) sham control group (SCG), with a sham treatment. The analyzed variables were pain, migraine severity and frequency of episodes, functional, emotional, and overall disability, medication intake, and self-reported perceived changes, at baseline, after a 4 week intervention, and at 8 week follow-up.

Results: After the intervention, the CTG significantly reduced pain (p = 0.01), frequency of episodes (p = 0.001), functional (p = 0.001) and overall disability (p = 0.02), and medication intake (p = 0.01), as well as led to a significantly higher self-reported perception of change (p = 0.01), when compared to SCG. In addition, the results were maintained at follow-up evaluation in all variables.

Conclusions: A protocol based on craniosacral therapy is effective in improving pain, frequency of episodes, functional and overall disability, and medication intake in migraineurs. This protocol may be considered as a therapeutic approach in migraine patients."

Do we really need the Cranial Nerves??? Hmmm…🤔🧐

Maybe let’s have a quick look at the role they play…

1. Olfactory Nerve: Responsible for the sense of smell.

2. Optic Nerve: Essential for vision.

3. Oculomotor, Trochlear, and Abducens Nerves: Control eye movements.

4. Trigeminal Nerve: Facilitates facial sensations and chewing.

5. Facial Nerve: Controls facial expressions and taste.

6. Vestibulocochlear Nerve: Involved in hearing and balance.

7. Glossopharyngeal Nerve: Affects taste and swallowing.

8. Vagus Nerve: Influences heart rate, digestion and way much more!!!

9. Accessory Nerve: Controls neck and shoulder movements.

10. Hypoglossal Nerve: Manages tongue movements.

That seems important….and it really is!!! It is paramount to keep them working well by easing any possible restriction on their pathway.
To draw for you even deeper the importance of the cranial nerves, I’ll list (some of) the common problems related to cranial nerves dysfunction:
• Chronic physical tensions
- tense/hard muscles
- migraines
- back and neck pain
- cold hands and feet
- unwarranted sweating
- grinding teeth at night
- nervousness
- lump in the throat

• Emotional issues
- irritability, anger, anxiety
- feeling of hopelessness, feeling ‘down’
- lack of energy
- tendency to cry easily
- extended periods of depression
- nightmares
- difficulty concentrating and sleeping

• Heart and lung problem
- Asthma
- chest pain
- shortness of breath
- high blood pressure

• Visceral-organ dysfunctions
- poor digestion
- constipation
- diarrhoea
- hyperacidity
- loss of appetite

• Immune-system problems
- frequent flu
- minor infections
- allergies

• Behavioral problems
- Increase of drinking and smoking
- Frequent injuries and accidents
- Excessive use of medicine
- ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome

• Other
- Excessive menstrual pain
- Skin problems

During CranioSacral Therapy (CST) session we use light touch to release tension/restriction in the passing nerves areas, enhancing its function. This lead to better nervous system balance, reduced stress, enhancing better communication within the body and boosting overall health, not only by reducing the symptoms but the most important by getting to the root of a particular ailment.

Sometimes it takes time to find the cause of our health issues, but it is worth it! It's our health, body, mind that takes us through this life.

I'm here to give you my hand and knowledge to start the therapeutic process together.

If you feel you don't need it, please share it with your close ones, you never know who is there around you, that need support. 🌿

¿Realmente necesitamos los nervios craneales? Hmmm...🤔🧐

- nerviosismo
- n**o en la garganta

• Problemas emocionales
- irritabilidad, ira, ansiedad
- sensación de desesperanza, decaimiento
- falta de energía
- tendencia a llorar con facilidad
- períodos prolongados de depresión
- pesadillas
- dificultad para concentrarse y dormir

• Problemas cardíacos y pulmonares
- asma
- dolor torácico
- falta de aliento
- hipertensión arterial
• Disfunciones de los órganos viscerales
- mala digestión
- estreñimiento
- diarrea
- hiperacidez
- pérdida de apetito

• Problemas del sistema inmunitario
- gripes frecuentes
- infecciones leves
- alergias

• Problemas de comportamiento
- Aumento del consumo de alcohol y tabaco
- Lesiones y accidentes frecuentes
- Uso excesivo de medicamentos
- TDAH, autismo, síndrome de Asperger

• Otros trastornos
- Dolor menstrual excesivo

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY & TINNITUS

Dear friends, today few words about Tinnitus, condition that many of us suffer from, but still vast majority don't want to admit that.
Let's open and talk about it, understand it and treat it!!! 🙂

The cause of your tinnitus can vary from sound induced, hearing damage to chronic stress and trauma held within the body. Stress and tension creates perfect conditions to switch on the adrenal state of fight or flight which is a heaven for the tinnitus to appear and then stick around for a long time. Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is one of the best therapy for bringing you out of this stage which can help the overall pattern of tinnitus (and hyperacusis) to steadily calm down and no longer be a threat.
CST helps you better understand and connect to tour body so that you can let go and release accumulated during many years tensions and stress. The annoying conditions could be held around your neck, shoulders, jaw area or in respiratory system, not to mention the head.
CST guidance your body to divert the focus away from thinking into feeling, allowing your nervous system to settle down and in turn, your auditory system quietens down.
Most tinnitus people need a few sessions of CST just to start being able to feel again and understand what true stillness means. Chronic stress and overwhelming situations are very good at shutting down the nervous system so that you cannot feel much at all. Part of treating tinnitus comes with opening up your nervous system again so numb areas in your body are replaced with feeling.
CST is one of the best treatments for easing you out of this hypervigilant state of red-alert which feeds tinnitus and helping you reconnect with your body. As you start to let go of all the years of built-up overwhelm in your system, you start to feel lighter, carry less baggage and as a result, your level of hypersensitivity gradually reverts back to normal.

FASCIA UNWINDING

Fascia is a layer of connective tissue below the skin that surrounds all of the cells, nerves, joints, tendons and ligaments in your body.
Body fascia is multi-layered it supports tissues and organs, lessens friction, eases muscle tension and tightens up reflexively. It also helps your bloodstream, bone tissue and skeletal muscles.
When it’s healthy, your fascia is slippery and smooth and it stretches with you as you move. If it’s not doing well, it can get thicker, drier and tighter and therefore cause you a lot of pain.
CST uses a technique called Fascial Unwinding. This is releasing restrictions which may be the deep rooted cause of pain, discomfort or all manner of dysfunctions, or which may be the crucial maintaining factor which is blocking recovery from some long-standing condition.
The causes of fascial restriction may stem from many different factors – from everyday sprains, strains, twists and bruises of joints, limbs, trunk or spine to operation scars and adhesions, major road traffic accidents, minor falls, sports injuries or internal inflammation.
The results of fascial restrictions are consequently just as wide-ranging, depending on the part of the body affected – from headaches, neck pain and acute torticollis to frozen shoulder, writer’s cramp and chronically weak sprained ankle or internal dysfunction affecting the digestive organs or causing menstrual or gynecological disorders.

Fascial unwinding can also be very valuable in releasing emotional tensions, particularly where the psychical trauma is associated with severe physical trauma.

The gentleness of fascial unwinding can probably only be appreciated through the experience of being treated. It involves firstly identifying the source of the fascial restriction. This is best carried out by gently resting the hands on various regions of the body and identifying the various subtle pulls and tensions manifested by the body fascia. In this way, an impression can be gained of lines of force all drawing towards a specific focal point (the source of the restriction) just as iron filings are drawn towards a magnet.

The process is always gentle, virtually painlessly, always following the body’s own demands and is usually experienced as a very relaxing, releasing, easeful and pleasant process. All to restore full mobility and pain-free movement to the area.

Fascial unwinding is a therapeutic process through which physical and emotional blocks, whatever their cause, can be released. Whether they are the result of physical injury, infection, disease or emotional factors, all traumas and tensions leave their mark on the body and are held into the body tissues in the form of restriction or constriction of some kind.

Restricted fascia is often the crucial maintaining factor in preventing recovery or causing recurrence of a condition. That’s why it is vital to start with CST the unique and profound process of release.

If you are already inspired by the complexity and importance of the fascia I invite you to watch this videos that will definitely broaden your knowledge. The whole series are called "The Secret Life of Fascia" by Bruce Schonfeld.
