Part of it has been feeling groundless. Part of it has been feeling like I’m shedding snake skin. Lots of questions about belonging — finding the balance between belonging to myself and being part of something larger than me.

When I get lost, my ego gets loud. The identification with I and me gets worse, and I sink deeper into the hole. But the hole is the pain teacher. Down there I get reminded of what matters to me, what I actually care about, where I’m heading.

Sometimes you don’t climb out of the hole. You come out the other side.

And grief is always the first move. I’m still learning to let it be the first one rather than the last thing I get to.

Anyway — here are some reflections that have come my way lately.

We often walk away from the version of ourselves that is most desirable — the one that’s 10% more free, more alive, more courageous. More flirtatious with life. More honest.
We wait, usually without noticing we’re waiting, for the perfect conditions before we let ourselves become that person: to meet life more fully, to express ourselves more authentically.
There’s an enormous amount of unfelt grief in that waiting. In standby mode. In not fully inhabiting what we know is our birthright. In whispering our song when we know the words to sing it.
Unfelt grief doesn’t stay still. Left alone, it curdles — into depression, into a quiet resentment toward ourselves for the life we’re not living. Eventually it becomes a voice that bypasses the heart entirely, one that tries to think us harshly into equilibrium, instead of letting us feel the ground and step forward.
This poem is about turning hope, a longing, into power rather than into despair. It’s about turning something external to myself into something that wants to live from within. Yesterday, as I was sitting on the beach, I caught myself thinking the words: ‘I need to find it here too’. I turned that into ‘I can find it here too’. And that is how the poem was born.

Happy eclipse,

Raf

Your breathing isn’t just affected by how you sit and move—it’s driven by what’s happening inside your body. 🫀
Most people don’t realize that your chemical environment directly controls your breath. When you’re bloated, running on three espressos, sleeping through your mouth, or dealing with hormonal shifts, your brain gets the signal that you are in constant survival mode.
The result? You blow off too much CO_2, your airways constrict, and your body stays locked in high-gear chest breathing—even while sitting completely still on the couch.
If you want to heal your breath, you have to look at the full biological picture.

You can’t “think” your way into a deep breath when your body is physically trapped. 🫁
Most of us assume shallow breathing is just “stress in our head.” But half the time? It’s just messy mechanics.
When you sit slumped over a keyboard, rock tight jeans, brace your core, or try to breathe through a stuffed nose, your diaphragm physically gets locked in a cage. Your body has no choice but to take short, shallow, emergency chest breaths.
It’s not a mindset problem—it’s an architectural one!
Un-trap the body, give your lungs some elbow room, and watch how fast your nervous system chills out.
📌 This is Part 1 of our 3-part series on why we breathe sh*tty.

I spent years trying to fix my life from the neck up.
I broke my body when I was 20. And for a long time after, I went looking for the answer in my thinking — better mindset, better discipline, better ideas. None of it held. I was building on a foundation that couldn’t carry the weight.
So let me say this plainly: connection, meaningful work, love. Those are the point. I’m not claiming biology matters more than any of it.
I’m saying your biology is what lets you receive it.
When your gut is inflamed, your breath is shallow, and your nervous system is stuck in fight, flight, or freeze, your body is spending everything it has just keeping you safe. There’s nothing left over for presence. You can sit across from someone you love and only half arrive.
That isn’t a character flaw. That’s physiology.
This was never about perfection, or optimizing yourself into someone else. It’s about building a body steady enough to hold your life — with more ease, more attention, more grace.

Feeling is knowing.✨
You don’t need a 45-minute setup, a yoga mat, or a silent room to reset your biology.
When you pause for just two minutes to breathe slowly and softly, you are actively shifting your neurochemistry. You are signaling to your brain that the immediate environment is safe, shifting your body out of “fight-or-flight” and dropping your heart rate in real time.
Even if it’s just two minutes.
Most days, life doesn’t give us time for an extended 20-minute session. But we always have two minutes—at your desk, before a hard conversation, or sitting in your car—to offer ourselves a moment of soft embodiment, rest, and repair.
Two minutes of soft presence beats an hour of practice you never get around to doing. If this felt good, try two or three rounds of the same for an even greater softening and reset.

An intense experience won’t heal a dysregulated nervous system. A daily practice will. 🌿
Hyperventilation and high-intensity breathwork can feel profound in the moment—they give you a massive, dramatic neurochemical rush. But let’s be honest: they are experiences, not teachers.
Here’s the truth most people miss: Most of our nervous systems are already jacked up.
If you are already living with elevated cortisol, daily anxiety, or chronic burnout, forcing your body through hyperventilation is just adding more high-intensity stress to an already overwhelmed system. In the long run, it can actually make your dysregulation worse.
If you are serious about rewiring your body, you don’t need another intense peak experience. You need softer, slower, more grounded daily practices that teach your nervous system how to safely down-regulate.
Real somatic safety isn’t built in a intense one-off workshop where you breathe until your hands turn into claws. It’s built in quiet, consistent 5-minute daily moments.
Consistency with the subtle beats intensity every single time.
