One crew mess, plenty of different ideas about a good day off.

After a guest trip, crossing or long yard week, what feels restorative can vary from one person to the next - and from one week to the next.

You might want to move, explore somewhere new or make the most of being near the water. Or perhaps it’s a long dinner, familiar faces and nowhere else to be.

When there’s a gap between guest trips or a quieter stretch in the yard, crew time ashore can quickly become another thing to organise.

Perhaps the simplest place to start is asking what people would genuinely enjoy. For one crew, that might be a hike, a surf, a run or a beach day. For another, it could be breakfast off the boat, a few hours without a plan - or no group activity at all (not everyone likes "forced fun"!)

By this point in the Mediterranean season, tired can start to feel normal.

A report shared through CHIRP Maritime's Superyacht Feedback programme explored the gap between rest recorded on paper and rest that actually feels restorative. It is a useful distinction on a busy yacht, where the hours between shifts may still include noise, shared cabins, interrupted sleep or a mind that has not quite switched off.

Fatigue may show up as shorter tempers, slower decisions or small mistakes beginning to cluster. Often, it is the change in someone that tells you more.
There may not be an easy fix during a charter or owner trip. A protected break, a clearer handover or one non-critical task moved to tomorrow might still help.

A first week on a yacht can be full of information, especially when someone joins mid-season and the rest of the crew are already moving at charter pace.

The practical briefing matters. So do the smaller explanations that rarely make it into a handbook: when the crew mess goes quiet, how a turnaround changes the day, who prefers a radio call and who wants a face-to-face handover, or where someone can ask a question without feeling they are holding everyone up.

Recent yacht-industry discussion has highlighted how hard it can be for green crew to get a first chance. ISWAN's work with yacht crew also points to gaps in contract understanding, safe recruitment knowledge and awareness of confidential support.

Once a new joiner is onboard, perhaps a useful question is: what are we expecting them to work out alone?

One place to start is to give the unwritten parts of life onboard the same care as the formal induction.

1️⃣ Step outside - disconnect from interior lights and engine noise for 60 seconds.
2️⃣ Box Breathing - inhale 4s, hold 4s, exhale 4s, hold 4s. Repeat 3×. Instantly lowers cortisol.
3️⃣ Shoulder Rolls - 10 times backwards. Release the tension from carrying provisions and engine room hunches.
