Thriving with D

Thriving with D Welcome! I’m Dolores Gage, 🇬🇧🇪🇸 Davis Facilitator and specialist in transforming the learning and lives of neurodivergent adults and children.

The neurotypes I support (in person and online) include ADHD, autism, Dyscalculia, Dyslexia, and Dysgraphia. As a Davis® Facilitator, I know what causes Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, and ADD/ADHD. I use my experience and expertise to support other English- and Spanish-speaking families struggling with similar challenges in an expat context. I’m based in Madrid, Spain, and deliver o

ne-to-one Davis® Programmes for adults and children both in person (at my office or in their home) and all over the world (through videoconferencing). These programmes empower them with the understanding and tools to manage their symptoms, overcome their difficulties and thrive in their life. I also support parents online through:
- a group course called "Why 'Tyrannosaurus' but not 'if'?" that makes parents the best helpers they can be. This course consists of six practical support sessions (2h each, once a week for 6 weeks)and equips parents with a clear and positive understanding of Dyslexia, as well as practical tools that build on their child's strengths. Even while completing the course, parents feel empowered to support their child more effectively and help them learn more easily.
- an English-speaking support group here on Facebook, also called Thriving with D. Just go to the Groups tab on this Page, and click on the link to access the Group. My goal with the Facebook Group is to provide a safe and supportive forum for international families like mine, and enable them to better understand and support their children's learning and protect/nurture their self-esteem. In the group, I share information about these learning difficulties, my group courses for parents, and insights into the different Davis® Programmes which I offer. I’m also training to be a Davis Autism Facilitator, so while I’m not yet able to deliver Davis Autism Programmes, I do have some understanding of this condition. So if you have someone in your family with autistic symptoms, you are more than welcome to join us in the support group.

A lovely tribute to an extraordinary man.

The extraordinary legacy of Ron Davis continues worldwide.

Ronald “Ron” Dell Davis, 84, of Burlingame, California, a pioneering figure in the fields of dyslexia and autism, passed away peacefully at home on August 28, 2026, after a brief illness, with his wife of 52 years, Alice, by his side.

Ron devoted his life to challenging conventional ideas about dyslexia, autism, intelligence, and human potential. Drawing from his own experiences with autism and dyslexia, he developed innovative, strengths-based approaches that have helped transform the way thousands of individuals and families understand learning differences and autism.

His groundbreaking work in dyslexia began decades ago and led to the development of the Davis Methods, including mastery programs for dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, and autism. His landmark book, The Gift of Dyslexia, published in 1994, became an international bestseller, selling over one million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages. He later authored The Gift of Learning, followed by his autobiography, Dummy, and co-authored Autism and the Seeds of Change with Abigail Marshall.

In 1995, Ron and Alice founded Davis Dyslexia Association International to train facilitators in his methods and ensure that his work could reach people far beyond his own practice. What began with Ron’s pioneering ideas grew into an international community of licensed facilitators serving individuals and families in more than 40 countries and 30 languages.

Ron’s work in autism was especially close to his heart. The Davis Autism Approach® grew from his unique understanding of autism and his belief that people on the spectrum should be supported through approaches that recognize their strengths, build understanding, and help them participate fully in the lives they choose. His work has touched thousands of individuals with autism and their families around the world.

Ron’s influence extended far beyond his books and programs. He challenged the assumption that dyslexia and autism defined what a person could learn or accomplish. He encouraged people to look beyond limitations and recognize possibilities, and he inspired generations of facilitators to carry that vision forward.

Ron often said that all things truly powerful are truly simple and his work reflects that.

Ron leaves behind not only his wife, Alice and his family, but an international community of facilitators, colleagues, friends, clients, and countless people whose lives were touched by his work. His legacy lives on in the programs he created, the books he wrote, and, most importantly, in the people who continue to believe that every individual has possibilities beyond what others may see.

Ron is survived by Alice; his sons, Ray and Philip; 4 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren, and his younger brother Keith.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Ron Davis Autism Foundation, 50 Woodside Plaza, Unit 520, Redwood City, CA 94061 or electronically via the Ron Davis Autism Foundation Charity page: https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/3926848

Sharing this tribute to Ron Davis with a very heavy heart.

I discovered Ron’s work while looking for ways to help my family, and it profoundly changed the way I understand dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, dyspraxia, autism and neurodiversity more broadly. As a Davis Facilitator, I regularly have the immense privilege of witnessing how his insights transform learning and lives.

Ron recently published his autobiography, Dummy, the Autobiography of a “Retard”, but I believe his greatest chapter is still to come.

The full significance of his discoveries has yet to be fully recognised: from fostering a more accepting and empowering understanding of neurodiversity, to effectively transforming the lives of those who learn differently, and offering a fundamentally different understanding of the foundations of learning. His work may not only help prevent learning difficulties, but also the mental health struggles (including the risk of su***de) life challenges and addictions that too often follow when people’s differences are misunderstood.

I feel incredibly proud to be part of the worldwide Davis community and to play a small part in carrying his work forward.

Ron’s legacy is immeasurable and priceless, and I truly believe the world has yet to discover the full magnitude of his gift. 💜🩵🤍

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Ronald D. Davis, founder of the Davis Method and creator of the programs that have changed how the world understands dyslexia, autism, and neurodivergent learning.

Ron grew up in a world he experienced as chaotic and painful. He didn't speak until he was 17. He couldn't read until his late 30s. And when he finally found his own way through it, he spent the rest of his life building a path for others to follow.

Ron believed that what he had created was not his to keep. It belonged to every facilitator who carried it forward, and every person whose life it changed. As he put it: "It cannot be unowned. If it's unowned, it will disappear." He entrusted that work to all of us, and the worldwide Davis community will continue to carry it forward.

Thank you, Ron, for everything you gave the world; for the millions of people who now see their own minds differently because of you; for seeing ability and possibility where others saw only limitations.

We'd love our community to share a memory of Ron, a photo, or the way his work has touched your life. Comment below, or tag us in your posts. We're gathering these to celebrate everything he gave the world.

Rest well, Ron. Your gift lives on in all of us. 💜🩵🤍

Three years of phonics. Tutoring. Flashcards. Nothing's working.
Your kid still can't sound out words. You're at your wit's end.

We hear from parents constantly: 'Nothing has worked.'

It's not failure, it's information.

It means your child's brain works differently and needs a different approach.

All Davis programs were created by our a neurodivergent person, Ron Davis, a neurodivergent individual. That's why they are different, that's why they work!

What if many learning difficulties could be prevented rather than remediated?

One of the things I value most about Davis Learning Strategies (DLS) is that they focus on building the foundations of learning before children begin to struggle.

Rather than waiting until a child falls behind, DLS provides practical, hands-on strategies that help children develop attention, self-regulation, literacy skills, confidence and, perhaps most importantly, an understanding of how to learn. The approach is designed to work alongside existing curricula and benefits a wide range of learners.

If you're a parent, teacher, learning support professional or simply interested in helping children thrive, I highly recommend this introductory online session with my colleague Priti Venkatesan, who has been doing outstanding work with DLS in India.

Many people associate dyslexia with difficulties reading and spelling. What is less widely understood is how often dyslexia is masked: by intelligence, hard work, perfectionism, anxiety, compensation strategies, or even other diagnoses.

This upcoming Davis UK & Ireland online event explores what lies behind the mask, helping parents, educators, professionals and dyslexic adults better understand both the hidden struggles and the often-overlooked strengths of the dyslexic mind.

The Davis approach has been helping neurodivergent learners for more than 40 years and offers a unique perspective on dyslexia and related forms of neurodiversity.

📅 Live online event on 27 Jun 2026, 09:15 – 20:00 BST
🎟️ Free to attend live
