I’ve been thinking a lot about tension lately.
We often see tension as something we need to get rid of as quickly as possible. But I’m beginning to believe that the more important question is not how we can avoid tension, but how we deal with it when it appears.
Maybe the first step isn’t immediately trying to change it.
Maybe we first need to allow it to be there.
To notice what is happening in our body.
To allow the emotion.
To let the energy move.
And to see what the tension may be trying to show us.
And then, just as importantly, it needs to be able to leave again.
How we do that will be different for everyone.
Movement, breathing, talking, crying, touch, meditation, being in nature, bodywork… sometimes we manage it ourselves and sometimes we need support.
The goal isn’t to create a life without tension.
It’s to be able to move through tension and return to calm and coherence, again and again.
I’m curious: what helps you truly let go of tension?
