Last week, ahead of our plenary meeting hosted by the Hellenic Digital Health Cluster (HDHC), consortium partners joined Clusters Meet Regions in 🇬🇷Athens, Greece, to explore how stronger collaboration can help innovation reach its full potential.

The event brought together 165 participants from 19 countries to discuss how clusters can strengthen regional competitiveness, build cross-border partnerships, and turn innovation into real-world impact.

Our partners Health and Life Sciences Cluster, Cluster Imago-Mol, and Hellenic Digital Health Cluster (HDHC) presented their activities and services, highlighting the role of clusters in connecting businesses, research organisations, and other ecosystem stakeholders.

The programme also included an interactive lab on digital health innovation and a visit to Athens LifeTech Park, Greece’s first biotechnology park. GATE, the coordinator of VELES, also presented our project, creating further opportunities to connect with the wider European innovation community.

💡 Why does this matter? Because advancing digital health and building a connected European health data ecosystem takes more than technology. It requires knowledge sharing, strong partnerships, and collaboration across regions and sectors.

By engaging with other innovation ecosystems, VELES continues to build connections that can support more effective health data sharing, drive research and innovation, and ultimately contribute to better patient care.

🌍 Four pilot studies. One shared goal: better healthcare through better health data.

At , we're working to build a Regional Smart Health Data Space ( ) that enables secure, interoperable, and more effective use of health data across South-East Europe.

To put this vision into practice, VELES is developing four pilot studies, each addressing specific healthcare challenges in the region:
🇷🇴 Romania – Brain Tumors
🇬🇷 Greece – Cancer Treatment
🇧🇬 Bulgaria – Alzheimer’s Disease
🇨🇾 Cyprus – Dementia

While each pilot focuses on a different challenge, they share a common purpose: demonstrating how trusted, high-quality, and interoperable health data can support healthcare professionals, empower researchers, and contribute to better patient care.

🌍 Your health data should travel with you.

Whether you're going on holiday, moving to another EU country, or seeking specialised treatment abroad, accessing your medical history shouldn't become a barrier to receiving the right care.

One of the key goals of the European Health Data Space ( ) is to make it easier for patients to access their health records and prescriptions across EU Member States.

With common standards for electronic health records and secure data sharing, healthcare professionals will be better equipped to access the information they need - helping patients receive more continuous and informed care, wherever they are in Europe.

💶 €11 billion in savings over the next decade

That’s the potential impact of better health data accessibility through the European Health Data Space ( ).

But the value of the EHDS goes beyond savings. By making health data more accessible, secure, and interoperable, the EHDS aims to:

🔹 Foster innovation by enabling researchers and innovators to make better use of health data

🔹 Support evidence-based policymaking with better data for better decisions

🌍 What could Europe’s health data ecosystem look like in 2040?

Imagine a Health Data Space where information can move securely across borders, patients have greater control over their data, and healthcare professionals and researchers can access the information they need to make better decisions.

This is the future explored in “𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟒𝟎”, developed within the Consortium by UEFISCDI.

The report looks beyond today’s challenges to explore what a trusted, interoperable, inclusive, and citizen-centered European Health Data Space could become - and what we need to do today to make that vision a reality.
