🚨 UK prisons in England and Wales are now required to formally accommodate vegan “belief-based diets” under a major update to the Food in Prisons Policy Framework.

The new rules recognize ethical veganism alongside religious diets, meaning prison kitchens must plan meals with vegan needs in mind as a protected right under the Equality Act. The Vegan Society has also been named as a key consultation body for prison food policy.

This change goes beyond basic meal options. Vegan diets must now be embedded into minimum menu standards for lunch and dinner, with stronger nutritional planning, supplementation guidance, and direct consultation with incarcerated vegans. Even Veganuary is now treated in a similar way to cultural or religious observances.

The UK prison system holds around 87,300 people, including an estimated 800 vegans. Reports in recent years highlighted concerns, including claims that vegan meals were sometimes withheld to identify “fake” dietary requests.

Supporters say this update marks a major step forward for dignity, fairness, and nutrition inside prisons. Critics are still debating how it will be implemented in practice.

The framework has not been updated since 2010, making this one of the most significant shifts in prison dietary policy in over a decade.
