In a bitter sweet moment we said farewell to Rakeb, our volunteer. What started as English lessons turned into something much deeper, moments of laughter, learning, and connection.

The kids not only grew their confidence, they genuinely looked forward to every lesson with her. As Rakeb shared, it was their energy and eagerness to learn that made her time so special.

The children sent her off with thoughtful gifts and heartfelt messages, and the team celebrated her with a certificate of appreciation.

“ትምህርት ቤት ለመጀማሪያ ጊዜ የተሸለምኩበትን ቀን መቼም አረሳውም። አባቴ አብሮኝ ነበር ‘ልጄ አኮራሺኝ’ አለኝ። ያን ቀን ሳስታውሰው ከፍተኛ ደስታ ነው የሚሰማኝ፤ ከዚህም በላይ ጎበዝ ተማሪ እንድሆን አግዞኛል።” ተስፋ

This Saturday, the children talked about the unforgettable day in their lives. The sessions were incredibly interactive, filled with honest reflections, laughter, and emotional moments. Each child shared memories that have shaped who they are today. The session was not only fun but also meaningful, creating a safe space for expression, connection, and learning from one another.

Leul is a strong and determined young man with big dreams. When his family faced serious challenges, he was at risk of dropping out of school. After joining Brave Hearts, he received the holistic support he needed to keep going.

Today, Leul is a college student studying Marketing, living independently with support for rent and food. He enjoys math and biology, plays the ‘በገና’ at church, and loves performing in theater with other children in our program.

Saturday sessions at the center have helped him grow in confidence, communication, and public speaking. Leul dreams of opening a center to support elderly people and give back the same level of care he received. 💛

Last Saturday, our volunteer Rakeb and youth Lemma spent time with the children talking about what it means to be a good friend. 🧡

Through stories, conversations, and shared ideas, they explored how friendship is built on kindness, honesty, and respect. The children also learned the importance of staying calm and speaking up when someone hurts their feelings.

By the end of the session, everyone walked away with a better understanding of how to choose good friends and how to be one too.

Meseret is a determined 16-year-old living with her mother and younger sister. Now in 9th grade, she has a love for chemistry and aerobics and a passion for dancing that brings her joy. Confident and outspoken, Meseret isn’t afraid to speak up and follows through on what she sets her mind to. Her friends describe her as caring, thoughtful, and decisive.

Through Brave Hearts, Meseret receives educational, health, nutrition, and psychosocial support. Beyond this, her younger sister is able to study with her at our drop-in center after-school. Today, Meseret feels more confident, supported, and part of a family that stands by her through every challenge. For her, our drop in center is a place of joy, laughter and learning.

With dreams of becoming a designer, Meseret practices designing in her free time. She is inspired by people with a kind heart.

Over the past month, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the most incredible students, students who are eager to learn and full of big hopes and dreams.

Their goals are different, but they all share the same determination to build a better future for themselves.

Teaching them has (...) reminded me that progress doesn’t have to be big to matter every word learned, every sentence written, every moment of confidence counts.
