New insights for implementing C-reactive protein point-of-care testing
In Belgium, C-reactive protein ( ) point-of-care testing (POCT) has not yet been widely implemented in primary care. Although scientific evidence shows that CRP POCT can help reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescribing in adults with acute cough, successful national adoption requires also understanding about the practical, organizational, and economic factors.
To investigate whether CRP POCT could be integrated into Belgian primary care workflows, an implementation project was conducted using focus group discussions with general practitioners and other relevant key stakeholders to address what barriers and facilitators should be considered before wider adoption. QuikRead go easy CRP was one of the CRP POCT devices included in the project.
The findings show that CRP POCT fits well into general practitioner’s workflows and supports antimicrobial stewardship by helping physicians make more informed decisions on antibiotic prescribing. Physicians considered CRP POCT valuable particularly in three areas:
✅ Reducing diagnostic uncertainty and supporting treatment decisions
✅ Supporting patient communication especially in situation when antibiotics are not needed
✅ Supporting decision making and reassurance of parents in paediatric care
For successful wider implementation, the study also points out the importance of clear guidelines, quality control, streamlined workflows and centralized support structures.
At , we are proud that QuikRead go easy CRP was part of this project, which provides valuable real-world evidence on the role of CRP POCT in supporting clinical decision-making, responsible antibiotic use, and patient care.
