✨ The Story of the Restaurant Kota ✨
In 2001, a fire was lit — and it still burns here today.
That was when Matti, Kuusamo’s best-known reindeer herder of the fifth generation, together with his wife Onerva, opened the doors of the kota to travelers.
Together, they shared stories, moments, and created a place where every guest felt truly welcome.
When my time began, I continued the story.
I built the tables and traditional benches from kelo wood with my own hands.
I shaped the interior in a spirit where the magic of Lapland could breathe, and commissioned a blacksmith to craft candle chandeliers, bringing soft, living light above each table.
Here, time slows down.
When a guest takes a seat, the outside world gently fades away.
Conversations soften.
Joy appears in people’s eyes.
Many who have visited have taken with them something impossible to pack — a feeling that can only be experienced and remembered.
Dinners have been created by Finland’s top chefs together with our wonderful dining room staff.
Yet food is only part of the story.
The true heart of the kota is the atmosphere.
And the moment when a guest realizes they are genuinely valued. 🤍
…and the story continues at the next destination of Kiekerönmaa.

Everything began with a simple idea: to create something that would not be born from compromise.
I didn’t want to build just a sauna — I wanted to create an experience. A place where architecture, craftsmanship, fire, and the northern landscape become one. A sauna that does not demand attention loudly, but instead stops you with its silence.
The space was designed so that all you need to do is look around. A large window opens toward Valtavaara, Konttainenvaara, the slopes of Ruka, and Lake Kitkajärvi. The landscape is not decoration — it is part of the experience.
At the heart of the sauna is a unique stove designed together with Tulikivi, featuring ceramic details created by ceramic artist Christopher White, inspired by northern nature and Huru-ukko — the gentle figure of Kiekerönmaa who invites you to leave everyday life behind.
Everything is authentically handcrafted: axe-carved wall panels, a birch ceiling built with my own profile design, and wide aspen benches shaped for warmth and comfort. Natural light fills the space by day, and at night the starry sky becomes part of the experience.
The Kiekerönmaa sauna is only the beginning.
Next, I will open the doors to other unique spaces of Kiekerönmaa — each its own world, united by one idea: to offer something that cannot be copied.

❤️ A TRUE STORY FROM VALENTINE’S DAY ❤️
On Valentine’s Day, I decided to do something that truly comes from the heart.
I got on my snowmobile and drove out to the field.
I started carving a heart into the snow.
A big one. The kind you could see from the sky.
When the heart was finished, I placed food for my reindeer right in the middle.
Then I called them.
And they came. 🦌
The moment they stood there, inside that heart, peacefully eating…
is something I will never forget.
I ran up onto the roof, phone in my hand, out of breath and smiling —
I had to capture that moment.
And I did. ❤️
One of the most unforgettable moments of my life.
A reminder that when you truly try,
you can create something beautiful.

When public transport in Lapland decides to take an unscheduled coffee break, there’s no need to panic – the old local reindeer sleigh steps in, now powered by a snowmobile. Not exactly eco-friendly, but fast, fun, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face, even in the freezing cold. ❄️🛷
