Löyly loading.

Welcome weekend!

Löyly is the essence, the soul, of a Finnish sauna.
It is the heat and steam created when water is poured over hot stones. And this is also why a Finnish sauna is not a dry sauna. Water belongs on the hot stones.

But löyly is more than steam. It is the feeling of the warmth, the atmosphere in the room, and the experience shared with others.

In Finland, we ask, "Was the löyly good?" Not how many degrees it was, how long you stayed, or how many rounds you did. What matters is how it felt, how you feel.

Happy European Day of Languages!

"Sauna on köyhän apteekki."

It’s an old Finnish saying that translates as: "The sauna is the poor man’s pharmacy."

It reflects how deeply sauna has traditionally been woven into Finnish life. Long before modern wellbeing became an industry, sauna was a place for washing, warmth, rest and recovery, and a place where people turned when they wanted to feel better. The saying isn’t medical advice, of course, but it says a lot about the role sauna has played in Finnish culture for generations.

The European Day of Languages was launched in 2001 by the Council of Europe and the European Commission as part of the European Year of Languages. It has been celebrated every 26 September ever since, promoting language learning, linguistic diversity and greater understanding between people and cultures.

This year’s theme is "Languages unite!"

We think that fits sauna rather beautifully.

Sauna brings people together, too. Around the world, people with different languages, cultures and backgrounds sit down on the same wooden bench, throw water on hot stones and share the same löyly.

And did you know that sauna is the only Finnish word that has been adopted as is into English and many other languages? A fitting symbol of our cultural impact.

Languages unite. So does sauna.

We don't build barrel saunas. And we don't intend to.

We build Finnish log saunas.

That decision has been clear to us from the very beginning. It starts with what we want Hetki to be, the kind of sauna we believe in, and the experience, quality and value we want to offer our customers.

A barrel sauna simply doesn't fit what we want Hetki to stand for.

Our answer to barrel saunas has always been a firm "no". But explaining why turned out to require quite a bit more space. So our founder Janne Oksanen wrote the full story.

Should a sauna roof be insulated?

Our advice is clear: Yes, absolutely.

We came across that question in a social media discussion group:

A roof is where insulation matters most in a sauna, because:
• Heat rises, so without insulation, particularly in the roof, warmth escapes fast.
• Proper insulation improves energy efficiency and reduces running costs.
• A well-built roof with a v***r barrier protects against moisture, ensuring durability and the longevity of your sauna – and in the case of an indoor sauna, also the surrounding structures.
• Less strain on the electric heater means it doesn’t have to work as hard, supporting a longer lifespan.
• And importantly, the result is steady löyly – that wonderful balance of heat and steam of Finnish sauna – for a much more enjoyable experience.

In other words: comfort, efficiency, and protecting investment.

If you’re planning to build or buy a sauna, whether indoors or outdoors, this is not the place to cut corners.

So, always ensure your sauna roof is properly insulated.
