🔸 Why do I act this way, even though I know I don’t want to?
- When emotions take over in our relationships.
Something small things happens. The other person said something that hurt. Or didn’t say something you wished they should say.
🔸 You noticed yourself getting hurt.
And before you really had time to think, you reacted in a way you later regretted.
You snapped. You withdrew. You started defending yourself or demanded an explanation. Or you shut the other person out completely.
And when the argument was over, perhaps that familiar, frustrating thought came to mind:
“Why did I do that?”
Because you do know how you would actually like to respond.
You would like to speak calmly. To explain what hurt you. To listen to the other person, too. To be the kind of partner, friend, or parent who doesn’t take their difficult emotions out on the people closest to them.
But exactly when your emotions are at their strongest, that can feel the hardest.
🔸 What if you don’t need to learn to feel less?
🔸 Maybe what you need is more space between what you feel and what you do.
🔸 Space to notice what is happening inside you – and the opportunity to choose how you want to respond.
