The snakes have returned!
Over the past week we have encountered more snakes around the sauna grounds than we have seen in years.
In Finnish folk tradition, such encounters were often understood as messages from deeper layers of the world.
reflects on the symbolism of the snake below. 🐍🔥
”While heating the smoke sauna today, we discovered a grass snake hiding among the firewood.
They are harmless creatures and welcome guests on our land.
In old Finnish folk tradition, snakes were not feared. They were often respected, and stories speak of the tradition of the house snake, a snake believed to live alongside the family and bring protection and good fortune.
According to some tales, the snake was even invited to the table to drink milk from a shared bowl.
One story tells of a child who became frustrated when the snake drank too greedily and tapped it on the head with a spoon:
“Leave some for the others.”
The snake carries remarkably deep symbolism in Finnish mythology. Moving between the surface of the earth and the hidden world beneath it, it was often associated with wisdom, renewal, power, and messages from unseen realms.
Interestingly, during the past week we have encountered more snakes on the sauna grounds than we have in years. Today a grass snake among the firewood. A few days earlier, even a viper resting on the threshold of the sauna door.
What is the snake trying to tell us?
If the old traditions are to be believed, such encounters are never entirely random. The message comes from deeper layers of reality, and our task is to discover how it wishes to take form in our own lives.”
