Back to Basics.

There is so much uncertainty in the world right now. New information, changing plans, and questions no one can answer yet. The mind tries to keep up, to understand and anticipate.

In the sauna, we can return to what we can feel and sense. The wood beneath our skin. The sound of water, the warmth of fire, and the movement of steam. Our own breath.

In the presence of the elements, life feels simpler. Fire warms, water turns to steam, and air carries it to our skin. The body can settle into the present moment, even while the mind is still searching for answers.

In the gentle warmth, we can remember something timeless, so easily forgotten in the rush of life. Löyly nurtures us, and the earth holds us.

This sums up my relationship with nature. Yes, that’s a slightly broken vacuum cleaner.

A connection with nature is often understood as walking in the forest or gathering wild herbs. But that’s only the outermost layer. It reaches into everything!

The clip on this vacuum, passed on to me by my cousins, snapped. One part no longer stays in place by itself, but with a little support, the vacuum still charges. For now, a ribbon holds it together. Maybe I’ll find a Velcro strap to make things a little easier. Vacuuming needs to involve as little effort as possible… 😅

I know that little feeling of embarrassment that can come with using things repaired many times over, or wearing patched clothes. And I know the pleasure of getting something shiny and new.

I think living wisely means learning to respect things that have been repaired again and again. They show that someone cared and made an effort. That something useful wasn’t thrown away just because it was no longer whole and beautiful.

For me, spending time with nature carries over into this, too. As I learn to value what grows around me, I also want to take better care of what I already have.

Sometimes a connection with nature looks like this: an old vacuum cleaner with a bow tied around it.

🌿

It’s an honour to be part of such a meaningful moment. In Finland, the sauna has long been a place to prepare for a new chapter in life. I love that we still make space for these moments today.

When we were children, our grandpa took us to press juice from our grandparents’ enormous apple trees. This autumn we returned with my sister and the newest member of the family. 🍎👶

There is something deeply satisfying about taking part in small-scale food production, seeing where things come from – and enjoying the fact that homemade always tastes a little better.

The harvest season is almost over. Soon it will be time to slow down for winter!

You can also taste this juice and other local treats as part of Sauna Kata’s longer sauna experiences. 🔥

Hunajan purkittelua klo 23.

Onhan tämä vähän järjetöntä, jos rehellisiä ollaan. Purkittaa hunajaa yötä myöten kaiken muun työn päälle.

M***a juuri tällaisina hetkinä luonnon kiertokulku konkretisoituu.

Taiteilija. Joogi🌀 sen esittelemisestä!)

Symbolin ympärillä kulkee mesiloitsu suomalaisesta kansanperinteestä.

Bottling honey at 11 p.m.

Honestly, this is a little absurd. Bottling honey late into the night, on top of everything else that needs to be done.

But it is in moments like these that the cycle of nature becomes something tangible. The bees awaken in spring, gather the surrounding landscape throughout the summer – and in autumn, it all finds its way into jars as honey. That was why I started keeping bees in the first place: I wanted to live closer to the rhythms of nature and witness its wonders with my own eyes.

I’m especially happy with this year’s label. At its centre is a Latvian symbol that I have admired for a long time. You may see a bee in it – and many other things as well.

Around the symbol runs an old Finnish honey incantation.

Sauna vie luonnon äärelle. 🌿

Mikä kasvi on saanut sinut viimeksi pysähtymään?

🇬🇧 Sauna brings us closer to nature. 🌿

Ground ivy has been my favourite discovery this summer – and a beautiful example of how sauna can change the way we see, smell and experience the nature around us.

Which plant has made you stop and take notice lately?

Tunnustan: tunsin pientä saunakateutta. 🫣😍

Suvi on rakentanut upean paikan Kråköön, aivan Porvoon kupeeseen. Todella inspiroiva paikka, jonka yksityiskohtia voisi tutkia pitkään!

Kiitos Suvi! Eli .sauna

I have to admit: I felt a little sauna envy. 🫣😍

Suvi has created a beautiful place in Kråkö, just outside Porvoo. Its full of details one could enjoy long time!

In the midst of the busy late-summer season, it was wonderful to receive a long sauna treatment myself and simply be taken care of.
🌿🌊

Thank you, Suvi! AKA .sauna
