HPV Vaccination Protect Against Cervical Cancer

You've probably heard that a HPV vaccine can protect women against cervical cancer. In fact, the vaccine may be most effective when given to girls and young women. However the strains against which the HPV vaccine provides protection is limited. The vaccine does provide cover against the most prevalent strains (learn all about Cervical Cancer).

What Are the Benefits of the HPV Vaccine?

The main benefit of the vaccine is protection from cervical cancer.

Two HPV vaccines are currently on the market: Gardasil and Cervarix. In 2006, the FDA licensed Gardasil, the first cervical cancer vaccine. In 2007 Cervarix was approved. However, they don't protect against all types of cancer-causing HPV. Vaccines protect against these four types of HPV:

HPV 6

HPV 11

HPV 16

HPV 18

These types are responsible for 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of ge***al warts (learn more about warts).

What parents should know about the HPV or Cervical Cancer Vaccine

Does your daughter need the HPV vaccine to help protect against cervical cancer?

Pap screening in girls and young women should be recommended as follows:

Within 3 years of becoming sexually active.

By age 21.

Most girls taking the vaccine will probably need fewer Pap smears taken at longer intervals over their lifetimes.

Has your daughter already been infected with HPV virus?

If so, receiving the vaccine won't prevent disease from that particular type. However, the HPV vaccine will protect against infection from the other HPV strains included in the shot.

Why Should Girls Receive the HPV Vaccine?

Full benefit of the HPV vaccine occurs only if you receive it before you're infected with any of the HPV strains included in the vaccine. That's why, vaccinating girls between ages 11 and 12 is recommended .Ideally, this is before they become sexually active. The HPV vaccine can also be given to girls as young as 9 and to girls from age 13 to 26 who have not received it earlier.

You may question whether 11 or 12 is too early to vaccinate, the vaccine has been shown to be more effective in immunizing against HPV when it is given to younger girls who have never been infected with the dangerous HPV strains

Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) - Know Its Benefits!

Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is a traditional and well established surgical procedure for treating diseases in the coronary artery. The process is carried out by using blood vessels alternately (vein or artery). Initially, CABG was performed by using the left internal mammary artery and saphenous vein. It was observed that the chance of occlusion in the vein grafts was much higher than the arterial grafts. In the last decade, total arterial grafting, which uses all the arterial conduits, is being practiced as CABG for better results.

of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

Traditional Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: In this type of CABG, the surgeon will initially open up the chest bone to gain access to the heart. The heart is stopped using medications and the body is connected to a heart-lung bypass machine to circulate oxygen and blood throughout the body.
Minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass grafting: In this surgery, small incisions are made on the left portion of the chest to gain access to the heart. This surgery is used to bypass the blood vessels present in the front portion of the heart.
Off-pump Coronary artery bypass grafting: In this procedure, the chest bone is opened up to access the heart. Here, however, the heart is not stopped during the surgery.

Patients, who have been suffering since a long time and have been operated on the vein grafts, have a chance of re-developing certain artery diseases such as a heart attack. To counter this possibility, surgeons have started using the method of Total Artery CABG. In this procedure, the left and right internal mammary arteries are used from the chest and the radial artery, from the fore arm for the surgery.

The main advantages of this procedure are:
The survival rate is higher in total artery CABG as compared to the traditional CABG.
It comes with long term benefits
The procedure is safe as well as feasible

Advancement in science and technology has largely contributed to the field of medicine. The methods of diagnosis for some of the very serious conditions have become readily available for the masses. Furthermore, there are a number of diagnostic tests in cardiology that give details about the condition of the heart. These tests help to find out which treatment options are best suited for the patient. Some of the most common among them include Echocardiography (also called echocardiogram test), Treadmill Test (TMT), and Electrocardiogram (ECG).

Echocardiography

An Echocardiography test is a visual outline of the movement of the heart. It is a test in which sound waves are used to produce live pictures of the heart. The picture is referred to as echocardiography. The doctor can monitor how the heart and its valves are working. The images help them spot fluid in the sac around the heart, blood clots in the heart, issues with the aorta (the most important artery connected to the heart) among several other possible complications.

Echocardiography is a pain-free test which can be done in the hospital or in the doctor’s office. The test normally takes up to half an hour. A standard or quality-based echo does not require any particular follow-up or preparations. A heart specialist or cardiologist will examine the results from the echo. After having echo, a person normally goes back to normal activities immediately.

Treadmill Test (TMT)

In a treadmill test, a person is asked to exercise on a treadmill and he or she is hooked up to the machine called electrocardiogram machine. This process allows the doctor to monitor the heart rate. The treadmill test is also known as an Exercise Stress test. This test helps the doctor determine if the heart receives sufficient oxygen and proper flow of blood when exercising. It could be directed for those who have been experiencing symptoms of coronary heart disease (which is also called coronary artery disease) and pain in the chest. This test is usually considered safe. But some exceptional risks include fainting, collapsing, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and heart attack.

However, these instances are rare since the test is usually performed under the supervision of a cardiologist so that any kind of emergency during the test can be effectively managed.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

The electrocardiogram is the oldest and the simplest of all the methods of cardiac investigation. It is an image of the electrical conduction that record the patterns of electrical signals in the heart. It is a very common test used to find out the heart problems and detect the status of the heart in many situations.

During an ECG, electrodes/sensors are attached to the chest and sometimes to the limbs for monitoring the electrical activity of the heart. This test is painless and non- invasive which provides quick results.

Take Away

These are some of the tests to detect heart problems. However, doctors recommend these tests depending upon an individual’s health condition.
