When you truly understand the magnitude of addressing Rheumatic Heart Disease across the Pacific, from prevention and clinical care to advocacy and the lived experiences of those affected, it is incredibly inspiring to see more ❤️ joining the regional team, sharing knowledge, experiences, and solutions.

It was a privilege to finally meet fellow RHD champions from Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, many of whom I had previously only connected with virtually. It was also wonderful to be alongside colleagues and friends from Fiji, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands Timor-Leste, Nepal, and the supporting big brothers from Australia and New Zealand.

Coming together from across the region and beyond reinforced the strength of our shared commitment to improving the lives of our people affected with RHD. It was also a powerful reminder that while our challenges can be overwhelming, we are not facing them alone.

What makes this gathering even more special is the formal launch of the Vaka Mauri Collective, a shared commitment to strengthening our efforts across the Pacific. This marks an exciting new chapter in our journey, one that will deepen regional collaboration, amplify our collective voice, and create even greater opportunities to learn from and support

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Kado and the Pacific RHD program team for their leadership, vision, and dedication in bringing this initiative to life.

We also remember the late Dr. Toakase of Tonga, whose passion, commitment, and tireless work in this space helped shape this vision and inspire the path we continue to follow today.

Happy to give consent for my son to undergo RHD screening by the school health team from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Fiji.

He has already been screened, but I fully support and appreciate this important initiative and would always encourage participation.

I am truly grateful for programs like this being offered in Fiji.

If your child is given the opportunity, I strongly encourage you to allow them to be screened for RHD/CHD. Early detection saves lives.

Throwback to the few snapshots from our three-day clinic at NRH. As expected, it was a very busy few days, with many children and families coming through for consultations.

Despite the long hours, it was rewarding to serve and support the team in providing care. Grateful for the opportunity and teamwork that made it all possible.

It was good to see this come full circle with Dr. Kuboto Kaniki of GP Private Medical & Dental Clinic,Solomon Islands.

3 years ago, after my first clinic in Honiara, he approached me and asked how services like this could be brought to the Western side of Solomon Islands.

I remembered him from his days as a medical student, and I know firsthand that coordinating trips like these is no easy task.

I am glad that we have finally taken the first step, and I am confident that more visits like this will happen in the future.

These services are most successful when we work closely with the team on the ground, who understand the local setting better and provide continuity of care long after we leave. We are also committed to seeing patients through and facilitate referal abroad when needed.

Grateful for the teamwork and shared vision to improve care for our children and hopefully adults in the near future.

Good afternoon from Gizo!
The capital of Western Province.

Yesterday marked the final day of our Western Province outreach. Following a special request from my dear friend Carol, and in collaboration with Dr. Kaniki, it was a pleasure to provide Maasina Heart Pacifika services to some children this morning.

Now, signing off from work, time to enjoy a little of this beautiful place before heading back.

Future visits and collaborations will be posted here.

Leana Hola Island Link Transport for taking us safely to the capital of Western Province. Your great service is highly recommended. (Call 7339845 for a booking when in Noro, Munda or Gizo)

We got off the hospital wharf and straight for clinics where the children were waiting. It was a busy clinic today, but the team remained in high spirits and we managed to see everyone.

Thank you to Dr. Boara, Dr. Alepio and your team for the warm welcome. Much appreciated.

It was truly our pleasure to serve the children of your beautiful islands.

Part 2: Rheumatic Heart Disease Awareness

Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) is a serious but preventable condition that affects many children and young adults in the Pacific, including Solomon Islands.

It often begins with untreated sore throats or skin infections caused by a bacteria called Group A Beta-Hemolytic Streptococcus. If not treated early, these infections can damage the heart valves which can lead to RHD.

Some steps that can help prevent RHD or progression of of RHD:
• Treat sore throats and skin infections early
• Seek medical attention at your nearest health centre if you notice any of the signs and symptoms mentioned.
• Ensure your child continues to receive their monthly penicillin injections as advised by their doctor.

Healthy hearts start with early treatment and awareness. Together, we can protect our children and communities.
