Fiji is currently prioritizing a strengthened national response to HIV.
Our latest surveillance efforts, supported by the expansion of decentralized testing across the country, identified 2,016 new HIV diagnoses in 2025.
While these figures show an increase in reported cases, they also reflect the Ministry of Health and Medical Services' success in reaching more people and connecting them to essential care.
Data indicates that these trends are primarily concentrated among young people, with 67% of new diagnoses occurring in those aged 20-34.
At the forefront of navigating this National HIV Outbreak Response Plan is Dr. Emele Bolakoro, representing the SRH and HIV Unit.
Dr. Bolakoro is working to foster a supportive, stigma-free, and anti-discrimination environment, ensuring that every young person in Fiji has the agency and knowledge to lead their own health outcomes.
“Building a sustainable future begins with health,” says Dr. Bolakoro. “We are navigating socio-cultural norms to ensure open dialogue and learning from our youth.”
To build a just and sustainable future, the SRH and HIV Unit remains committed to evidence-based interventions and community-led action.
