🌹 Herb of the Week - Rose

RĂłs - Rosa spp.

This time of year, the first wild roses start to open, delicate petals, thorny stems and that reminder that tenderness doesn’t mean weakness.

In herbal tradition, rose is often associated with the heart - not just physically, but emotionally too. A plant for the times you’ve been holding it all together and you’re ready to let yourself be held instead.

Ways to work with rose this week:
🌹 Add a pinch of dried rose petals to tea (even just for the scent)
🌹 Make a simple rose water spritz for after a sea dip or shower
🌹 Sit with a rose on your walk and practise noticing beauty without rushing past it

Have you roses blooming near you yet?

🌿 Herb of the Week - Elderflower

Bláth an Trom - Sambucus nigra

If you’ve noticed the hedgerows turning frothy white lately, that’s elderflower.

She arrives quietly in early summer.
In Irish and European folk tradition, elder has long been honoured as a protective tree, the kind you don’t rush past.

The flowers are the part we work with right now and they make the most beautiful simple rituals:
✨ Elderflower tea - to slow the nervous system and soften the day
✨ Elderflower cordial - summer in a bottle
✨ Even just stopping to smell the blossoms on a walk (highly recommend!!)

Have you seen elderflower blooming near you yet?

🌿 Herb of the week — Wild Garlic

Creamh — Allium ursinum

If you’ve walked through a damp Irish woodland in May and suddenly thought, “someone’s chopping garlic”… it’s probably this. Wild garlic arrives like a soft takeover : bright green leaves, white star flowers and that unmistakable scent hanging in the air.

It’s one of my favourite seasonal signals. You don’t need a complicated practice to connect with the land, sometimes it’s as simple as noticing what’s growing in abundance right now.

A few things I love about wild garlic:

🌿 The leaves are edible (best before flowering) beautiful chopped into eggs, butter or soup

🌿 The flowers are also edible - gentle, slightly sweet and lovely scattered over salads

🌿 It’s a brilliant early food source for pollinators in spring woodlands

🌿 In folk tradition, it’s long been associated with protection and vitality, a plant that “clears” and wakes things up after winter

If you’re foraging: go slowly, harvest lightly, and always double check: wild garlic can be confused with lily of the valley (which is poisonous). The easiest tell is the smell: crush a leaf gently and it should smell strongly of garlic.
