Applying for a French visitor visa? 🇫🇷

One of the most common areas of confusion is private health insurance (PHI).

Many people are surprised to learn that travel insurance is not the same as the health insurance required for a French visa application, and not all policies meet the visa requirements.

We’ve seen applications delayed or refused because the wrong cover was chosen, and we’ve also worked with clients who have struggled to obtain suitable cover due to pre-existing medical conditions 😔

The cost of health insurance can vary significantly depending on factors such as age, medical history and the level of cover required, so it’s important to explore your options early in the process.

If you’d like recommendations for insurers commonly used by our clients, comment:

and we’ll send you some suggestions.

As always, this information is general guidance only and every application should be assessed on its own circumstances.

A quick but important update for anyone living in France or planning a move here 🇫🇷

The cost of residence permits has increased, with first-time applications rising from €225 to €350 and renewals increasing from €225 to €250.

While visa and residency costs are rarely the most exciting part of moving abroad, they are an important part of the budget that many people don’t factor in until later.

If you’re planning a move to France, it’s always worth keeping an eye on changes like these, as rules and fees can change with little notice.

As always, we recommend checking the official French government websites such as Service-Public.gouv.fr for the most up-to-date information, as requirements and fees can change over time.

The 90/180 day rule causes so much confusion, especially for British second-home owners and people dividing their time between countries 🇫🇷

The most important thing to remember is that your allowance does not automatically reset every time you travel.

It’s a rolling calculation based on how many days you’ve spent in the Schengen Zone during the previous 180 days.

If in doubt, always use an official Schengen calculator before making travel plans.

Another very common mistake we see when people move to France 🇫🇷

Many people assume they can travel to France first and then organise their visa once they arrive, but for most long-stay visas, the application process must be completed from your country of residence.

This is why it’s so important to understand the visa process before making the move, as trying to fix things afterwards can become stressful, expensive and sometimes impossible.

Follow along for more common mistakes we see people make when moving to France, and if you would like a free checklist of the visa application process, comment CHECKLIST, and I’ll send one over.

One of the biggest misconceptions we see when people move to France 🇫🇷

Many people assume that because they own a property here, sometimes for many years, Brexit somehow doesn’t apply to them.

But unfortunately, owning a home in France does not automatically give residency rights, and if you plan to stay longer than the 90 days allowed, you’ll usually need to apply for the appropriate visa.

It’s completely understandable why people feel confused. For years, British people, in particular, had the freedom to come and go between both countries with very little restriction, but things have changed significantly since Brexit.

Want to move to France after Brexit? 🇫🇷

One of the most common visas people apply for is the VLS-TS Visitor Visa. This is usually for retirees, people with passive income, or those wanting to enjoy life in France without actively working here.

Having gone through this process myself, and now helping others do the same — these are the 3 main things France looks for when assessing your application:

1️⃣ Financial resources
You’ll need to show you can support yourself during your stay, usually around €16,000 per year per person. This can come from pensions, savings, salary or investments.

2️⃣ A French address
You’ll need somewhere to live in France, whether that’s a rented property, staying with family, or sometimes even a long-term Airbnb.

3️⃣ Health cover
This is one of the biggest mistakes we see people make. France wants proper private health insurance — not just standard travel insurance, and we’ve seen applications refused because the cover wasn’t sufficient. If you’re retired, you may instead qualify for an NHS S1 form.

There are also some very common mistakes people make during the visa process, which I’ll cover in my next video — so follow along for more 🇫🇷
