//Sleep, is it overrated?//

We talked to a few of the attendees of the sleeping conference recently held on campus. The average youth needs about 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night to function properly (not even talking about actually studying) so even when you feel like you have too many things to do, remember you might do them better after a proper night of sleep and it will make you happier too. Sleep tight!

🇬🇧Some mental health tips given by Leesa Ko ! Our SOS team member 😁

What is SOS ? SOS stands for student outreach and support, it is a student group dedicated to wellbeing and health on campus whether it is physical or mental of the wellbeing.

What advice would you give to students regarding on stress-release ? 🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️

1° Remind yourself it is not a big deal if the stress coming from presentation, assignment and exam. “ It is not the end of the world , it would be ok

2° Just being aware of the fact that all you can do is give your best, you can’t expect more from yourself.

3° Try to focus my energy on just doing my best and getting things done rather than on stressing about not being good enough for whatever

4° When I have a particularly stressful or busy week and you feel so overwhelmed, I will take a couple of hours or even a full day to unplug and reset myself. Take a couple of hours to hang out with friends or lay down watching movie or walk around.

Thanks for meeting us SOS and making this campus a safer place, stay tuned for part II !

//Come join sooth your mind and work your muscles at the campus Yoga-Club//

Since your club is quite new, can you briefly introduce your club and the activities you have?
Yoga is a practice that focuses on people themselves, it is about breathing and stretching. The stretching and moves are helping students to get in a shape that is good to breathe and mediation. It is a practice that aims to facilitate mediation because mediation is not easy, it is a tool to get to mediation. Yoga is a sport that strengthen our back and abs, it is holding yourself and everything is connected. Yoga really helps even when any part of your body is hurt, the postures we do can help you relax your muscle and release the distention. Our group mainly two types of yoga: Pilates and Acroyoga, on Tuesday we de Acroyoga and on Wednesday we do Pilates.

How long have you practised Yoga ?
I practiced Yoga since I was very young together with my mum, as she is a yoga teacher.

Why do you think Yoga is different from other sports? How does Yoga help you release your stress ?
I think Acroyoga is more like other kinds of sport, it has to be practised by two people, a base and a flyer. When someone is on the feet of someone they need to have strong faith and trust in each other.
Yoga helps you to focus on what is important, it offers you some space to think. When your mind is filled with too many things, it is difficult to prioritise things, so by doing yoga you will be able to free out some space and have a clearer mindset. Hence, you will feel less stressful after you know the thing which bothers you may be as important as you think and you will find your problem is actually much simpler and easy to solve.
Stress can be regulated and people feel stressed because they try to reach perfection. While in Yoga, there is no goal, you just go with your rhythm and pace, you try to improve yourself and there is no clear rule to follow. All you have to do is be present at the moment and breathe.

What is the biggest challenge in practising Yoga?
Mediation is hard in yoga because you have to focus on your breathing, yoga is not an end but mediation is what yoga aims for, we usually meditate after we practice yoga. It is very hard to have nothing in our mind.

What advice would you give to our students who are interested to try Yoga?
Don’t afraid to give a try. You can explore different types of yoga once you start to practice, during your practice you will find the best type of yoga that corresponds to your need and teacher that suits you most. I think everyone needs yoga, my mum used to have many physical problems, but all the illness just disappeared after she practised yoga, it is indeed an invisible medicine for people.

Thanks for meetin with us Yoga-Club and to our students please check it out!

//Interview with our favorite Professor – Part II//

Who is our Prof.Sophie Rochefort-Guillouet?
She was actually a Sciences Po Student just like us i.e. she knows the struggle. She has been teaching at our campus since its creation and therefore is a true Havrais.

What does she think about our student life and the stress level we face?
She told us that she sometimes worries with our colleagues if we get enough sleep (even if they are aware that they are part of the problem). She says especially students in the amphi sometimes seem to be lacking sleep and indeed I think all of us have fallen asleep there at least once… The professor said she even already had students falling from their chair because they fell asleep
She sees part of the issue that we live in a kind of bubble in which you can go for days without meeting people. Further, we tend to be quite competitive amongst ourselves adding even more stress. She shared a story with us of one of her South Korean students who had a burn out and later wrote a book about the experience. He started with a discussion he had with our professor. He had asked from where he should start learning from, and she had ironically answered the Big Bang. This where the issue lies is that sometimes we even make things more difficult for ourselves and go further than what our professors asked us. We are told to learn about the 20th century migration but start with the Big Bang. What our professor believes is that sometimes its better to be slightly less ambitious but take better care of ourselves. She says that before she was able to better check after her students as they were smaller number but as we are becoming a bigger campus we have to learn to better look after ourselves and each other as students when we see someone struggling.

How does mental health affect our academic performance?
She says that she had many students where she felt that they were not eating properly, not sleeping or feeling they weren’t socializing with the other students, ultimately being all alone as sometimes they had only focused on studying or faced other difficulties. Under such conditions it’s very difficult for students to produce academic work and take part in class, so she wishes professors would learn more about mental health difficulties students may face so they can be understanding and adapt to their needs or spot when a student needs help.

We are very thankful to the professor that she went out of her way to talk us and just like she said please take care of yourself, the people around you and try to speak our even if you feel that everything is too much!

Lots of Love,
LHealp
