In countries like Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, street dogs live alongside people every day. In Moscow, some have even learned to ride the metro for food.

That didn't happen by accident. These countries have built systems where dogs are vaccinated and fed. They are part of healthy communities.

And this is proof that we can coexist safely.

How did wolves become dogs? The truth is, we’re still figuring it out.

Scientists generally point to three primary hypotheses—each tracking a different road to domestication.

1. The Self-Domestication (Scavenger) Path: Wolves actually domesticated themselves. The evolutionary shift began when a sub-population of ancient wolves possessed a genetic variant giving them a shorter "flight distance" (less fear of humans). This trait allowed them to safely scavenge near human trash piles. Natural selection favored the bravest, least aggressive scavengers, gradually isolating their gene pool from wild wolves.

2️. The Human-Initiated Adoption Path: This path relies on early artificial selection. Upper Paleolithic hunter-gatherers likely adopted orphaned wolf pups, raising them within human camps. As these pups grew, humans actively chose to breed only the individuals that displayed cooperative behaviors—like barking to alert the camp to danger or tracking game—forcing a rapid behavioral evolution.

3️. The Mutualism (Co-Evolution) Path: This was a reciprocal biological partnership. Humans had tools and sharp daytime vision; wolves had incredible night vision and an unmatched sense of smell. By informally trailing each other's hunts to share the spoils, their behaviors intersected. This grew into a tight social symbiosis where both species drastically increased their survival rates.
Some scientists also believe that selecting wolves for tameness unintentionally changed their appearance over time—known as Domestication Syndrome—leading to traits like floppy ears, curly tails, and spotted coats.
While the exact path is still debated, one thing is clear: our relationship with dogs is one of the oldest and most remarkable partnerships in human history.

Sarawak, Malaysia
Advancing Rabies Control Through Mass Dog Vaccination

In Sarawak, a large-scale dog vaccination campaign is
underway to combat dog-mediated rabies — a critical step toward protecting both animal and human health.

Rabitecwas deployed in Kuching, Sarawak as part of a coordinated, multi-stakeholder effort bringing together government, veterinary department, NGOs, and international partners.

Led by the Department of Veterinary Services, Sarawak SPCA, and SIDC Sarawak, in collaboration with Mission Rabies, the campaign reflects the power of partnership in tackling complex public health challenges.

More than 25 field teams mobilized thousands of vaccine doses making strong progress toward the 70% vaccination coverage needed to interrupt rabies transmission.

This initiative demonstrates how science, innovation, and collaboration can translate into meaningful, on-the-ground impact.

This type is often missed or misdiagnosed, and many cases go unreported. The World Health Organization (WHO) says, about 20% of human rabies cases are the “silent” type. In dogs too, studies suggest that roughly 1 in 4 may show this silent form.
