Point-of-care lung ultrasonography is an increasingly used bedside tool for evaluating the respiratory status of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. A growing body of evidence exists to support its clinical utility in the assessment of respiratory distress syndrome, transient tachypnea of the newborn, pneumothorax, atelectasis, and pleural effusion. A grande richiesta riprendono i corsi teorico-pratici di ecografia polmonare neonatale e pediatrica in italiano presso il mio centro a Parigi. Vi sono date disponibili a settembre, ottobre e novembre con preferenza per specializzandi, dottorandi o giovani strutturati (ma aperti a tutti). Il corso darà la possibilità di una piccola immersione in Rianimazione e chiarire eventuali possibilità di stage successive.

Small for gestational age (SGA) neonates are known to have higher incidence of BPD compares to appropriate for gestational age (AGA) patients. The PATH-BPD international multicenter cohort study demonstrated that SGA and AGA patients with moderate-severe BPD have similar lung aeration and gas exchange.

There is not just one BPD, there are several forms and we are finally opening the can and cross the different patients characteristics to define their “BPD phenotype”. Crucial for the new biological therapies that are around the corner.

Viral pneumonia is rare in neonates but it can trigger ARDS and presents unique diagnostic difficulties. Here we summarize lung ultrasound appearances which span from mild abormalities to full hepatization. Not pathognomonic but indeed useful.

• We report five cases of neonatal viral pneumonia describing their lung ultrasound findings. Perché ci riguarda tutti? Perché il mondo é andato avanti. Non è più quello degli anni 80.
Oggi la neonatologia esiste e salva vite di neonati gravissimi, con risultati inimmaginabili solo pochi anni fa. Continuare a ignorarla, a non investire, a non accettarne il riconoscimento e favorirne l’ulteriore sviluppo vuol dire fare un danno al nostro stesso futuro.
