Viral pneumonia is rare in neonates but it can trigger ARDS and presents unique diagnostic difficulties. Here we summarize lung ultrasound appearances which span from mild abormalities to full hepatization. Not pathognomonic but indeed useful.

• We report five cases of neonatal viral pneumonia describing their lung ultrasound findings. They present the whole spectrum of lung ultrasound semiology and are unspecific for the viral aetiology or the patient age. Lung ultrasound findings are consistent with the clinical severity (i.e. worse u...

Grazie a Marcello Gemmato, Robert Nistico, Paolo Pedone, Federico Bianco e tutti i partecipanti oggi.

Wednesday, June 24, is a special day entirely dedicated to RSV—a topic that spans critical care, pediatrics, public health, and obstetrics. It’s an area where things are changing rapidly (and for the better!), with several new prevention options emerging. We hope to see many of you there—we’ll be discussing this with critical care specialists, pediatricians, obstetricians, and public health physicians.

Next Tuesday I will be speaking at the full day virtual conference dedicated to the “limit of viability” by the Pontifical Academy for Life.

A whole day dedicated to clarify what is nowadays the limit of viability, what neonatology has been able to do and what are the open ethical issues for babies, women, families, communities, HIC and LMIC countries, and what we can expect in the future if birth rate declines further and there is not enough investment and innovation.

With the participation of (amongst the others):
Tullio Ghi
Guilherme Sant'Anna
walter ricciardi
Victor Javier Lara-Díaz
Maurizio Faggioni
Pablo Requena
Gilberto Turati
Alexandra Benachi
And the PAV President Renzo Pegoraro

With an unique multidisciplinary collaboration we studied, for the first time, the mechanical power delivered to neonates during invasive mechanical ventilation. After the first experiences of neonatal ventilation in the 60s, it is only now that we have been able to measure how much power and energy are transmitted to the newborn lung. These items are crucial to avoid injuring lungs while keeping the baby alive. Power and energy were interestingly very similar to those delivered in older children: this will shape the design and the use of neonatal ventilators from now on … even more for premies but also for term babies with severe respiratory failure.

Got this sweet thanking note from the colleagues of the American Pediatric Association for my talk and contribution to the Special Interest Group on global newborn health. I just spoken on the future of neonatology and I feel very flattered for the welcome given to one of the last sessions at the PAS2026.
