What do you do for recovery?

After pushing my body hard at L’Étape du Tour de Femmes on Mont Ventoux, this week has been all about recovery — and it’s paid off.

My HRV was 101ms yesterday and 129ms today 🙌 and I’m feeling slightly bionic again! ⚡️

I’ve focused on nourishing food, plenty of good protein and giving my body what it actually needed rather than rushing straight back into training.

And I’ve had a little help along the way…

🧘‍♀️ Sunday — Power Yoga at Lac Montriond with Ursula at Yoga Snow to get my body moving again.

🙌 Monday — Shane at Morzine Chiropractic helped calm the muscles that had gone into overdrive protecting my osteoarthritic knee during the event and got my hips moving properly again.

✨ Followed by a wonderfully relaxing treatment “Wild Magic”, energy combo of massage, Reiki and reflexology with Carrie at Little Wild to help calm my nervous system.

🧘‍♀️ Tuesday — Movement again with Yoga by Sara Harbeth.

💆‍♀️ Wednesday — Sports massage with Kristina at Alpine Body Care Massage.

🏋️‍♀️ Thursday — Time to start rebuilding with a strength class with Rachael Hallewell at Buzz Performance.

💪 Friday — TRX this morning, followed by three glorious hours at Les Sources de Chéry spa this afternoon. Sauna and cold dipping, I’m coming for you! 🧖‍♀️🥶

🚴‍♀️ And tomorrow… back on the bike.

We put so much thought into our training schedules — the rides, runs, gym sessions, distances, weights and performance goals.

But how much thought do we put into our recovery schedule?

Recovery isn’t time wasted between training sessions. It’s when we give the body the opportunity to adapt, repair and come back stronger.

Massage can be an important part of that — helping restore movement, reduce muscular tension and giving your nervous system an opportunity to switch out of constant go mode.

Invest in your recovery as much as you invest in your training. Your body will repay you.

I’m now feeling slightly bionic and very curious to see where this new release of energy takes me! ⚡️

What do you do to help your body recover?

“Can you just rub my neck?” 😅

Every massage therapist smiles a little when we hear that… because your neck is often the one making the most noise, not the one causing all the trouble.

Our bodies are brilliant at compensating.

One shoulder starts rolling forwards… your neck jumps in to help… your upper traps start working overtime… your lower back wonders what it did to deserve being pulled in every direction… and somewhere your lats are quietly tugging on your arms while pretending to be completely innocent. 🤷‍♀️

And then there’s the serratus anterior… the muscle hardly anyone has heard of. Sitting underneath your shoulder blade, it helps your scapula glide over your ribs. When it isn’t doing its job properly—or it’s become part of the compensation party—your shoulder blade can stop moving freely, your ribs don’t expand as well, and suddenly taking a deep breath feels harder than it should… but you don’t realise, as your body’s been gradually compensating.

The body doesn’t usually end up with one tight muscle. It becomes one big, overprotective team of muscles all trying to keep you moving, even if that means creating tension somewhere else.

That’s why I don’t just massage the area that hurts. More often than not, that’s simply where your body is shouting the loudest—not where the problem actually began, which was probably a long time ago!

It’s not about chasing pain—it’s about understanding why it’s there. It certainly can’t all be unraveled either one massage booking.

One of my favourite moments is when someone gets off the couch and says:
💬 “I can breathe properly!”
💬 “My shoulders feel lower!”
💬 “I didn’t realise I could move my neck like that!”

The painful area is often just the messenger, your wake up call. The real culprit may be somewhere completely different.

That’s one of the reasons I still love this work after all these years. Every client walks in with a different story, and every body tells it in its own unique way.

Your body is an incredible puzzle…A regular massage helps identify when your body starts to compensate, so you don’t get that wake up call with a stiff neck in the morning.

What is a muscle knot? 🤔

Despite the name, a muscle doesn’t actually tie itself into a knot.

Your muscles are made up of thousands of tiny muscle fibres, which contract and relax to create movement. Normally, after they’ve done their job, they switch off and return to a relaxed state.

Sometimes, due to repetitive movements, overload, injury, poor posture or stress, a small group of these fibres doesn’t fully relax. They remain in a shortened, contracted state, creating a small, sensitive spot known as a trigger point.

Because these fibres stay contracted, they can:
✨ Reduce local blood flow.
✨ Increase pressure on surrounding tissues.
✨ Become painful when pressed.
✨ Even refer pain to another part of the body.

How does trigger point therapy help?

During massage, sustained pressure is applied directly to the trigger point. Although it can feel tender, this gentle, sustained pressure helps calm the nervous system, encourages the contracted fibres to let go, improves circulation, and restores normal movement within the muscle.

It’s important to remember that massage doesn’t simply “break up knots.” Instead, it helps the muscle return to its normal resting length while addressing the reason the trigger point developed in the first place.

💆‍♀️ The goal isn’t just to relieve pain—it’s to help your muscles move, function and feel their best.

I use a number of massage techniques to help your body feel its best and restore your well-being.

A beautiful four-day journey, stripped back to the simplicity of what the mountains give us.

Thank you, Emily EMILY RUTH | YOGA, MASSAGE & RETREATS , for creating such a special retreat. Your retreat and yoga gently grounded us, reminded us to slow down, and helped us reconnect with what really matters – to simply be.

Sharing this experience with such an incredible group of strong, supportive women made it even more special. For four days, I switched off from the demands of work, embraced every step, and immersed myself in what was around us, the mountains, my home. I’ll never tire of sitting quietly, gazing out at the colours of the flowery grass meadows and blue sky, and soaking up the calm, strength and energy they give.

We covered just under 50 km with around 3,500 metres of ascent, staying in mountain refuges that ranged from basic to unexpectedly luxurious. Every one of them had its own charm, but that mushroom soup was a delight!

As both a massage therapist and someone passionate about movement, I particularly loved Emily’s new found approach to yoga. We both see the effects of modern life every day – rounded shoulders, restricted breathing, stiff thoracic spines and bodies that have adapted to desks, driving and stress. Her classes aren’t just about stretching; they’re about restoring balance, creating space through front and back rib cage , allowing the diaphragm to move freely, and helping the body work with gravity rather than against it. It was the perfect complement to long days in the mountains.

I’ve taken far too many photos, but here are a few moments that capture just how special these four days were.

I’ll definitely be back next year. Until then, I’m making a promise to myself to have more time for me, to pause, not let every day dash by. If any of my friends have ever thought about joining one of Emily’s retreats, I couldn’t recommend it more. I’d love to share the experience with you.

Not quite a cold dip — searching for my iPhone!

The horrible accident occurred last night… taking an evening walk to help enjoy the evening and help me sleep better. Walking along the river Dranse and stopped to check the temperature… out jumped my mobile phone from my rucksack to enjoy a swim to the bottom of the riverbed. Despite our efforts wading in the water, it was too deep with a strong current to risk diving underwater.

So bye bye phone.. thank goodness for once the insurance will replace it!

Therefore, for now, my old phone has come back to life, limping, and hopefully tied me over until the replacement arrives. It’s not so up to date, so bear with me if you are trying to connect, best way via WhatsApp on either my English or french number.

Ps. It’s been a very stressful 12hours getting bank accounts working and SIM cards sent when everyone wants to verify you via your mobile text!! (Which you can’t access).

What a fantastic week away with an amazing group at Rocacorba Cycling 🚴‍♀️☀️

Huge thank you to Leanne Fanoy for the massage recovery session — always interesting as a therapist being on the receiving end of treatment! One thing that came out of it was how surprisingly flexible my hips are for a cyclist, which is largely thanks to the brilliant work of , who I’ve recommended to Leanne for when she visits Chamonix this summer.

Massage therapists helping each other and sharing knowledge — exactly how it should be 🙌

A big thank you as well to Joe and Amelia for organising such a great trip, and to our excellent guides Nil and Xevi from Rocacorba Cycling for looking after us all week.

Highly recommend the experience if you love cycling, sunshine, climbs, great food and relaxing accommodation. And if you’re ever heading to the Morzine area and need some recovery work after the mountains, you know where I am 😊

Copenhagen plank holds… brutal but brilliant 🔥

This exercise targets the stabilising muscles that often get forgotten — especially the inner thighs, hips, glutes and deep core muscles.

A lot of people focus on stretching tight muscles, but don’t strengthen the muscles designed to support and stabilise the body. When these weaker muscles tire or switch off, other areas start compensating… often creating tension, overload and recurring aches.

This is something I regularly find during massage treatments. Sometimes the muscles causing discomfort aren’t actually the problem — they’re just overworking because other stabilising muscles aren’t doing their job properly.

Strength, stability and mobility all work together 💪

And yes… 30 second holds definitely burn 😅

Thanks to at for my personal training plan!

Don’t wait until you need a massage…

The best results come when you’ve got something in the diary ✨

I tend to get fully booked quite quickly, so last-minute appointments aren’t always available. Planning ahead means you get the time that suits you — your body and nervous system will thank you for it.
