Snippets from a fab weekend 🤩

A bit of pushing myself and a bit of slowing down.

A mixed doubles Hyrox sim which challenged me physically and gave me that feeling I love from pushing myself.

Then a completely different kind of movement at a wellness afternoon, slowing things down, meeting new people, breath work, journalling and a relaxing sound bath, with incredible food!

Plus a rare shopping trip and lunch out with my husband too.

Feeling very grateful for a weekend that gave me a bit of everything I needed.

Getting older doesn’t mean caring less.

You are allowed to still care about how you look.

You are allowed to want to change your body.

To get fitter.
To become stronger.
To set yourself a goal and work hard to achieve it.

To try something you’ve never done before.

And to prioritise YOU and your health because you want to stay fit, strong and capable for as long as possible.

You don’t have to accept feeling unfit, weak or uncomfortable in yourself simply because you’re getting older.

And you certainly don’t have to decide that your best years are behind you.

In fact your new goals and best years are ahead of you.

I’m 56.
And I’ll keep sharing what I’m doing and how I’m challenging myself.

But more importantly, I hope it reminds another woman of everything she is still capable of too.

This is why I’m so passionate about working with women in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s, helping them get stronger, healthier and more confident in themselves, and realise just how much they’re still capable of.

If you’re constantly trying to lose weight, but what you really want is to look stronger, leaner and more toned…

At some point you need to think about building muscle too.

And building muscle requires fuel, energy to train hard, recover and also build that muscle.

Between these two photos I’ve had periods where I’ve deliberately eaten more because my goal was to build muscle and get stronger.

I’ve had periods where I’ve eaten less because I wanted to lose body fat.

And I’ve spent plenty of time simply maintaining.

The goal hasn’t been to make myself smaller and smaller.

It’s been to build a strong, healthy body and then at times, lose some of the body fat to reveal the muscle I’ve built.

Because if you’re constantly dieting without ever giving yourself the opportunity to build muscle, you may lose weight.

But that doesn’t necessarily create the strong, lean, toned and trained body you want.

Not all progress happens when the scales are going down.

Sometimes progress looks like eating more, lifting heavier and building the muscle that will change how your body looks and what it can do.

I didn’t create the physique I have now by constantly trying to eat as little as possible to make myself smaller.

And here’s the thing…

When you build muscle, you can actually look leaner and more defined at a higher body weight.

Because looking lean & toned isn’t simply about weighing less.

If you want to change how your body looks, don’t only focus on losing weight.

Give yourself the opportunity to BUILD your body too.

If you’re a woman in your 40s, 50s or 60s and you want to get stronger, healthier and change your body without spending the rest of your life on a diet, this is exactly what I help women do through my 1:1 coaching.

DM me COACH and let’s chat about where you are now, what you want to achieve and whether coaching could help you get there.

How often do you let the things you DIDN’T do completely overshadow everything you DID.

A less than perfect week doesn’t erase everything else you’ve done.

And sometimes this is where having a coach really helps.

Someone to give you reassurance and perspective when you can’t see it yourself.

To remind you of the progress you ARE making and help you work out what to do next rather than throwing the towel in.

Because the more you can keep going when things aren’t perfect, the greater your chance of actually succeeding.

I help women in their 40s, 50s and 60s get stronger, healthier and more confident in themselves, with an approach that actually fits their life.

If any of this sounds familiar, perhaps you’ve lost weight many times before.

You KNOW you can lose weight.
You can be really focused when you need to be.

You follow the diet.
You cut things out.
You say no.

You lose the weight.
But eventually, you want to go back to eating “normally”.
And that’s where the problem often starts.

Because if “normal” means going straight back to the way you were eating before, it’s very easy to find yourself back where you started.

Until at some point you decide you need to “get back on it” again.
And round you go.

This isn’t because you need more willpower.

It’s because there’s too big a gap between how you eat when you’re trying to lose weight and how you eat when you’re not.

And this is a HUGE part of what I help women change.

I don’t just want you to be able to lose weight.
I want you to be able to go for dinner, have a holiday, enjoy Christmas, eat foods you love and live your actual life without feeling like you’re either ‘on it’ or ‘off it’

Because ultimately, you want to find a way of eating you enjoy, that supports your health and your goals and helps you feel good in your body, without constantly starting over.

I help women in their 40s, 50s and 60s get stronger, healthier and more confident in themselves with an approach that actually fits their life.

Today I ran a 10K.
It wasn’t the 10K I’d planned or trained for. A hamstring injury meant I hadn’t run for the last 10 days and, although my physio gave me the go ahead to run today, I had to adjust how I approached it.

And that’s really the point of this post.

Because things won’t always go to plan.

You won’t always stick to your planned meals.

You won’t always eat in a way that supports your goals.

You won’t always get all your workouts done.

There will be days when you can’t be arsed to get out for the walk.

Life, work, family, illness, injury, holidays, tiredness… they will all get in the way at some point.

And when that happens, it’s very easy to think - “I’ve messed it up now, so what’s the point?”

And that’s often where one thing not going to plan turns into giving up altogether.

But you don’t have to do that.
You can adjust the plan.

You can do less.
You can make the next meal a better choice.

You can do a shorter walk instead of the longer walk you’d planned.

You can train once this week instead of 3 times.

You can stop judging what you didn’t manage and look at what you CAN do instead.

Because doing your best doesn’t always mean doing everything you originally intended to do.

Sometimes your best is simply refusing to give up on yourself when things haven’t gone the way you hoped.

Today, for me that meant letting go of the race I’d wanted to run and doing the one I was capable of running.

Tomorrow it’ll be something else.
Because that’s life.

The plan can change without your goals having to completely disappear.

Because doing something will always take you further than giving up.

You want to tone up, look stronger and change your body shape.

You keep hearing that you need to strength train.

But there’s one problem…
You just don’t like the gym.

And maybe you genuinely don’t.
So you continue doing classes but you’re just not seeing any changes.

But before you write the gym off completely, I want you to be honest and ask yourself…

Is it actually the gym you don’t like. Or is it how you FEEL when you’re there?

Because if you walk in and don’t know what exercises to do, how to use the equipment, what weights to choose or whether you’re doing any of it correctly, of course you’re probably not going to enjoy it.

You feel out of your depth.

And it’s very easy to turn that feeling telling yourself, “Gyms just aren’t for me.”

But when you have a plan, know what you’re doing and start to feel more confident and capable, the experience can feel completely different.

And you might even start to enjoy it.

Sometimes enjoyment comes AFTER confidence and competence, not before it.

I genuinely thought I was doing all the right things.

I exercised A LOT.

I worked hard. I got sweaty. I watched how many calories I’d burned. I tried to be “good” with my food.

But some of the things I thought were helping me were actually making it harder.

More exercise wasn’t necessarily better.
Eating as little as possible during the day wasn’t helping when I was starving and snacking all evening.

And getting a workout done didn’t mean I’d “earned” extra food.

What eventually changed wasn’t just my body.
I changed the way I approached exercise, food and looking after myself.

I trained to get stronger.
I ate proper, filling, nutritious meals.

I still enjoyed food.
I still did cardio.
And I stopped expecting a quick result.

10 years later, I’m still doing those things.

And now I help other women make the changes that help them feel stronger, healthier and more confident in themselves too, without feeling like they constantly have to start again.

I help women in their 40s, 50s and 60s do exactly that, with an approach that actually fits their life. If you’d like my help, DM me COACH or head to the link in my bio to find out more about 1:1 coaching.

It’s NEVER too late to start feeling better about yourself.

And that you don’t have to quietly accept things as they are.

You don’t have to accept feeling uncomfortable in your body but convincing yourself otherwise.

That you’re just not strong or fit anymore.

That the confidence you once felt has gone.

That looking after yourself feels harder, so perhaps this is just how it is.

But your 40’s, 50s, 60s and beyond don’t have to be about becoming less.

You CAN still get stronger.
You CAN improve your health and fitness.
You CAN change your body.
You CAN feel more confident in yourself.
You CAN have more energy and feel more capable.

And you CAN absolutely still set goals for yourself and be excited about what you’re capable of becoming.

You haven’t missed your chance to feel strong, healthy, confident and happy in yourself.

If Hazel’s story has made you think “I want this for myself”, comment READY below or send me a direct message and let’s have a chat about where you are now and what you’d like to change.

Are the expectations you have of yourself setting you up to feel successful… or like you’ve failed?

Because there can be a big difference in how you feel about yourself, even when the outcome is exactly the same.

Let me explain.
You said you’d exercise 4 times this week.
You managed 2.
And instead of thinking, “I exercised twice this week,” you’re disappointed with yourself because you didn’t do what you said you would.

But what if you’d started the week saying:
“I know I can realistically manage 2.”
You do 2? You did what you said you’d do😊.

Manage a third? Brilliant.
You’ve done more than you said you would.

Same two workouts.
Completely different way of feeling about yourself.

This isn’t about lowering your standards.
It’s about being realistic about your life and building trust in yourself by actually doing what you said you were going to do.

Be honest… are you guilty of expecting too much of yourself, then feeling like you’ve failed when you don’t manage it all?
Tell me in the comments.

If you recognise yourself in this, I talk a lot more about it in this week’s Strong Healthy Happy podcast, including how being more realistic about what you can actually do can help you keep showing up.
