Five years ago, the escapist I me would probably have given up halfway through.

For the past two-plus years, most weekends have been spent studying, attending sessions, completing assignments and preparing for exams, alongside work, family life and everything else that comes with it.

None of it would have been possible without the support of those around me. Someone spent countless weekends picking up and dropping off my child for activities while I was studying. You know who you are and I am deeply grateful. 🙏

I would also like to thank the teachers and the institute for the guidance and support throughout the years.

I am happy to get the certificate but even more than that, I am grateful for having stayed the course.

This journey was never really about accumulating knowledge. It was about internalising it, reflecting on it, doing more swadhyaya (स्वाध्याय) and understanding myself a little better through the process.

And ultimately, that is what I hope to share with others. Not just techniques or postures, but a space to slow down, reconnect and meet ourselves with a more awareness and compassion. 🌿

It’s been a little quieter here over the past couple of weeks as I was engrossed in preparing for and completing my advanced yoga certificate exams alongside the usual rhythm of work and life.

This also reminded me of is how easy it is for our own wellbeing to slip into the background when life becomes full.

And it’s not because we don’t care or we don’t know what to do but because it can be hard to maintain consistency without support, structure and a little accountability.

That reflection was also part of Busy Life Reset session that we did last month and has become a part of the inspiration behind creating the Samagra Reset Circle.

A monthly space designed to help make wellbeing feel more sustainable and realistic in everyday life.

We begin on 21 June, International Yoga Day 🌿

I will be sharing more about it over the coming days.

Do you remember the first time you went to a yoga class?

I do. I spent most of it watching everyone else, wondering if I was doing it right, waiting for it to be over.

Even in shavasana I was not really resting. I was monitoring.
But then as I kept going back, week after week. It started getting easier and one day as I lay down, I actually relaxed without even trying.

That moment is your parasympathetic nervous system switching on. Your body moving out of alert mode and into rest and digest.

And here is the thing, the same pattern shows up everywhere. A new job, room full of strangers, a difficult conversation. The body stays on guard until it has gathered enough evidence that it is safe.

I wrote about this properly on the blog this week including a simple heart rate monitor exercise that shows you how well your nervous system is regulating right now.

Since the Busy Life Rest session, I have been thinking about how most of us live in constant ‘on’ mode.

Even during rest, the mind keeps on moving,
Thinking,
Planning,
Replaying the conversation,
Trying to stay on top of everything

And over time, the body can forget what it feels like to actually slow down.

The body doesn’t need to do one big reset but small actions done consistently.

Slower breaths,
Quieter mornings,
Stepping outside for a few minutes

Giving the nervous system small signals that it is safe enough to relax again.

Take a moment and notice your body right now.

Are your shoulders lifted without you realising?
Is your jaw gently clenched?
Is your tongue resting tightly inside your mouth?
Are the muscles around your eyes or forehead holding tension?

Many of us carry stress in the body without even noticing.

And sometimes, the simplest shift can begin to change that pattern.

Softening the shoulders.
Unclenching the jaw.
Letting the tongue rest gently.
Relaxing the face.
Finding a position that feels supported.

Small changes, but the body is always listening.

Research in nervous system science suggests that these subtle signals can shape how the brain interprets safety in the body.

And in that sense, these small moments of release are not just relaxation… they are communication with the nervous system.

Modern life keeps many of us in a constant state of ‘doing’

Even during moments of rest, the mind often continues planning, processing and thinking ahead.

Over time, this can affect our energy, sleep, focus and ability to properly switch off.

On 19 May, I will be hosting a free online Busy Life Reset session as part of Grampian Wellbeing Festival.

We will explore:
• how stress impacts the nervous system
• why rest doesn’t always feel restful
• simple ways to support the body through everyday habits
• a short guided relaxation practice

A gentle and practical session for anyone feeling overwhelmed by the pace of modern life.

We often think we need a big reset to feel better.

A weekend away.
A day off.
One long yoga or wellness session.

And while those things can help in the moment, the nervous system usually responds more to smaller experiences repeated consistently.

A slower morning.
A deeper breath.
A few quiet minutes without stimulation.
Moments where the body no longer feels under pressure.

The body learns through repetition, not intensity.

Been reflecting on this while writing my next blog post.

Do you also find that the smaller things done regularly help more than occasional big resets?
