👶 Safe Sleep Advice for Parents & Carers 👶

Patients who are parents or carers of babies up to 12 months old should be made aware of the risks of co-sleeping (sleeping with a baby on a bed, sofa, chair, or similar surface).

Co-sleeping can increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), particularly in certain situations such as smoking, alcohol use, extreme tiredness, or sleeping on a sofa.

For trusted advice on safer sleeping and co-sleeping, visit The Lullaby Trust:

Sleeping together with your baby is known as co-sleeping. Our advice helps reduce the risks of co-sleeping, keeping your baby safer.

💊 Did you know? Adult doses of paracetamol can vary depending on body weight.

If you weigh 50kg (7st 12lb) or less, you may need a lower dose than the standard adult recommendation.

Taking more than the recommended amount can lead to accidental overdose and may seriously harm your liver.

⚠️ Always:
• Read the patient information leaflet
• Check if other medicines you take also contain paracetamol
• Ask your pharmacist if you’re unsure about the correct dose

Did you know your local pharmacy can supply Naloxone? 💊

Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and pharmacies can provide it without a prescription to anyone at risk, or anyone likely to witness an overdose.

This includes:
• People who use opioids (prescribed or non-prescribed)
• Family members, friends, or carers
• Support workers and members of the community

💡 Naloxone is safe, simple to use, and available as a nasal spray or injection. It will only work if opioids are present and won’t cause harm if given in an emergency.

Pharmacy teams can also show you how to recognise an overdose and how to use Naloxone, so you feel confident if the situation ever arises.

🚨 Always call emergency services in an overdose situation. Naloxone buys time, but medical help is still essential.

Nasal decongestant sprays and drops (like those containing xylometazoline or oxymetazoline) can be really effective for quickly relieving a blocked nose 🤧

⏰ However, they should only be used for short periods no more than 5 days.

Using them for longer can actually make congestion worse (a rebound effect) and increase the risk of side effects such as irritation, dryness, and ongoing nasal blockage.

💡 Top tip: If your symptoms last longer than a few days, it’s better to switch to alternatives like saline sprays or speak to your pharmacist for advice.
