We have a hashtag

This defines our team and how we strive to provide the best care for our patients. We strive to give our patients the best rehabilitation, and want to use the best tools and resources to do this. At today’s Physio inservice we were further building on the great work we currently do.

We are using our VALD Performance forcedecks and forceframe more and more within our rehabilitation and performance services to put real numbers on asymmetries, strength and power deficits, so rehabilitation is specific to our patients needs. We can also remeasure to ensure we are hitting the improvements required before returning to activity and sport.

We are fortunate as have an expert in our team, Kevin Symon (SPEAR Performance manager), to guide and facilitate our evolution into greater objectivity. What did I say at the start 🥰

🩰 Dancers - naturally flexible or hypermobile?

Did you know that around 60–90% of dancers are hypermobile? Hypermobility can help create the beautiful lines and range of motion needed in dance, particularly ballet. While dance training helps improve and maintain flexibility, hypermobility in dancers is more often genetic rather than something that is purely trained.

Many hypermobile dancers are asymptomatic and may even see their hypermobility as an advantage in dance. However, greater joint range also means the body relies heavily on muscular strength and control to maintain stability and support movement safely. Risk of injury in hypermobile dancers is higher than for non-hypermobile dancers, and prevalence of injury in dance is already higher than in contact sports like football!

✨ The key to dancing healthy and pain free?
Maintaining flexibility through strength training across the full range of movement. Strong muscles help support hypermobile joints, improve control, and reduce injury risk while allowing dancers to keep the mobility needed for performance.

As part of EDS & HSD Awareness Month this May, we’re encouraging dancers to think beyond flexibility alone — stability and strength matter too. 💪

Are you truly ready to run… or just hoping your body keeps up?

At SPEAR, we’ve launched our brand new Run Ready Service — designed to help runners understand exactly what’s happening beneath the surface.

Using our latest data collection and performance profiling systems, we assess:
• Muscle strength
• Elasticity and spring
• Limb symmetry
• Force production
• Running-specific capacity

This isn’t guesswork.
It’s objective insight into how your body performs — and where it could perform better.

The goal?
Reduce weak links. Improve efficiency. Build confidence. And help take your running to the next level.

One of the biggest factors in accurate testing is familiarity.
That’s why understanding the movements and tests beforehand matters. Better understanding means better data. Better data means better decisions.

Whether you’re chasing a PB, returning from injury, or simply wanting to move and run better — this is your chance to learn what your body is really capable of.

So the question is…

Are you ready for Run Ready?

💙 The month of May is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome & Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder Awareness Month 💙

So… what actually are EDS and HSD?

They’re connective tissue conditions that affect collagen—the structure that supports your joints, skin, and more. The most common type is hypermobile EDS (hEDS), while HSD describes people with similar symptoms but who don’t meet the full diagnostic criteria.
But here’s the thing—it’s not just about being “bendy” or double-jointed.

For many people, it can mean:
✨ Persistent joint pain
✨ Frequent sprains or dislocations
✨ Fatigue that doesn’t go away with rest
✨ Dizziness and other whole-body symptoms

Because symptoms show up in so many different ways, they’re often treated in isolation… and the bigger picture gets missed.

🧩 Awareness helps connect the dots
Follow along this month as we break it down, share real experiences, and explore how physiotherapy can help you feel stronger, more stable, and more confident in your body.
💙

Are you ready to race? Or are you just hoping for the best? 🏃

Introducing Race Ready — our brand new performance profiling service designed specifically for runners gearing up for the Aberdeen Half Marathon on 18th July.

- Do you ever wonder why you fatigue near the end of a run?
- Do you suffer from recurrent calf cramps?
-Do you feel like one side is doing all the work while the other is on holiday?

These are exactly the kinds of questions Race Ready is built to answer.
Developed in partnership with James Cruickshank PhysioRun and powered by VALD Performancetechnology, Race Ready puts you through a series of key performance tests, giving you real data and clear guidance on the specific markers you need to address before race day. No guesswork. No crossing your fingers on the start line. Just an honest picture of where you are, what your body is capable of, and what you need to work on to get to that finish line feeling strong. 💪

This is what proactive performance support looks like and it's just the beginning. More exciting performance profiling services are coming to SPEAR very soon.

Spots are limited ahead of race day, so don't wait. Find out more and book your Race Ready session by calling 01224 900102, or drop us a message if you have any questions.
