This afternoon’s spotlight goes to Vili and Anne🧡

If you’ve popped into the centre on a Friday morning you’ll know this dynamic duo well, they keep our centre moving on one of our busiest times of the week. Here’s what they both had to say about volunteering at Maggie’s.

Anne-
“I retired from the NHS in 2022 and felt I still wanted to do something worthwhile. Maggie’s is a special place where you meet lots of special people and if I can make a small difference to their day then I feel I have contributed to the Maggie’s team.”

Vili –
“I started volunteering at Maggie’s because of my mother’s history with cancer and saw how Maggie’s supported her. I want work that feels real and like I’m making a difference for people. Spending time with centre visitors helps me to take a different perspective, reset my mindset and mature. Maggie’s to me is a place I can get experience and learn. It’s nice to be part of a good community with lovely people.”

It’s day 5 of Volunteer Week here at Maggie’s🧡

This morning we are celebrating our lovely centre volunteer Hilda!
This morning's spotlight goes to wonderful Hilda who has volunteered at our centre since 2023. Hilda was kind enough to share the reasons that she chooses to volunteer at Maggie's every week.

"On retiring from my job, I wanted to volunteer for a cancer charity and Maggie's seemed to be exactly what I was looking for. From the moment I stepped into the building I was put at ease by everyone I met and Knew this was the right fit for me."

"The ethos of Maggie's is that all are welcome whether it's to speak to someone or just to chill out with a cuppa. Walking into Maggie's for the first time can be a very emotional experience. As a volunteer your role is to welcome visitors and reassure them, they are in a safe place."

"Having volunteered for 3 years you can see first-hand how the services, run by a dedicated team of staff, positively impact the lives of the people they support. I feel lucky to be part of Maggie's and would encourage anyone wishing to volunteer to give Maggie's a try. You will not be disappointed!"

“To me, Maggie’s is a space for everyone who lives with cancer to come and get emotional and financial advice.”

Day 3 of our Volunteer Week here at Maggie’s🧡

We’re shining a light on Jackie who has been volunteering with us here at the centre since 2023. Here’s what Jackie has to say about volunteering with Maggie’s.

“After retiring from a very busy role in an oil company in 2023. I decided I wanted to do something meaningful in my retirement and to give back to the community. Various friends and family have experienced cancer, and some have been supported by different Maggie’s Centres. I thought Maggie’s might be a good fit for me.”

“I wasn’t quite sure what would be involved but had a helpful discussion with the Centre Manager and then a few weeks induction shadowing other volunteers and getting to know the staff members. This time allowed me to be sure that Maggie’s was the right place for me but also for Maggie’s to check whether they thought I would be suitable. Thankfully, we both agreed that my volunteering at Maggie’s would be a good fit.”

“Definitely the best part if being a volunteer is meeting so many different people. Our visitors to Maggie’s come from all over Northeast Scotland and from every walk of life and background. Each one and their families have such interesting lives, and it is always nice to hear about families, pets, holidays, house renovations.... you name it!”

It’s day 2 of our Volunteer Week🧡

Today we are celebrating our lovely Anne who has been volunteering at our centre since 2020. Here’s what Anne has to say about volunteering at Maggie’s.

“I volunteer at Maggie’s as it benefits my physical wellbeing, engages me with a team and gives me satisfaction to help others. Volunteering at Maggie’s gives me a value in life and a purpose in helping others, meeting new friends and other volunteers.”

“Having had family members with cancer I decided that I wanted to give support to other people experiencing cancer, providing social connections and helping people meeting with the team at Maggie’s. Volunteering at Maggie’s gives me a sense of fulfilment and motivation.”

It's Volunteer Week here at Maggie's from June 1st - 7th🧡

We'd like to shine a spotlight on some of the lovely volunteers that make our centre warm and welcoming.

Sue started volunteering at Maggie's in February 2025 and told us a little bit about what Maggie's means to her.

"I retired and wanted to do some volunteering work. I benefited from Maggie's as a visitor several years ago following treatment for breast cancer and really appreciated the kindness and support I received from Maggie's staff, volunteers and other visitors at the time. I volunteered because I wanted to help other people in the same way Maggie's helped me."

"It means a lot to me to be in a position to help visitors - with just a welcome and a cup of tea! I like to think I make a difference - even a small one."
