How to help prevent Ingrown Nails 👣
✂️ Trim nails properly
Cut nails straight across, not rounded at the edges
Avoid cutting them too short—leave a bit of white at the tip
Use clean, sharp clippers to prevent jagged edges
👟 Wear the right footwear
Choose shoes with a wide toe box so toes aren’t squeezed
Avoid tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes for long periods
Make sure socks aren’t too tight either
🧼 Keep feet clean and dry
Wash feet regularly and dry them well (especially between toes)
This helps prevent infections that can worsen ingrown nails
🦶 Protect your toes
Be careful during sports or activities—repeated trauma can lead to ingrown nails
Wear protective footwear if needed (e.g., steel-toe boots for work)
🧴 Soften nails if needed
If your nails are thick or hard, soak feet in warm water before trimming
This makes cutting easier and reduces the chance of improper trimming
🚫 Don’t pick or tear nails
Avoid ripping nails or pulling at the corners
This often causes the nail to grow into the skin
⚠️ Watch for early signs
Redness, swelling, or tenderness at the nail edge
Treat early with warm soaks and proper nail care before it worsens
👨⚕️ Consider professional care
If you’re prone to recurring ingrown nails, a Foot Health Practitioner can help with proper trimming techniques
