👉 With the endless noise and hype about processed foods it can be really difficult for parents to feel confident in which options are ok to give their little ones

🤍 So here’s a simple reminder, from a paediatric dietitian and busy mum of 2 …

🥣 That cereal with fruit can be a wonderfully nutritious part of your little one’s diet, with a few quick considerations.

👉 Choose fortified, low sugar and fibre rich options, and serve with some fruit to help support iron absorption.

🙋‍♀️I am 100% in the ‘I sometimes give my kids cereal for dinner’ club - I’d 10/10 recommend it!

🥣 Which cereal options do you include in your LOs diet? Let me know 👇

“Why don’t you just try cutting XYZ out of their diet?” is one of the unsolicited phrases I like least.

Why?

As a mum, I so completely understand that what you want is for your little one to be healthy and happy. I know it often feels like the right support isn’t available, so we often turn to Facebook groups and WhatsApp chats to try and work out what to do.

But in 16 years as a clinical Dietitian, I’ve seen far too many times the damage that the ‘just try cutting out XYZ’ sort of advice can do. From slowed growth, weight loss, food fear, stress and anxiety to children developing food allergies which may otherwise have been preventable.

The approach that’s right for your little one depends on so many different factors, and needs an individual approach.

👶🏼 When it comes to weaning, your baby might have a big appetite for solids, or a much smaller appetite.

👉 Whilst both of these can be absolutely healthy, and normal, it’s important that babies with smaller appetites are given lots of opportunity to get all the right nutrition they need to grow and develop.

👆These are some of tips I share with families in clinic when we are looking to optimise a little one’s nutrition during weaning - all will add extra nutrition in a very small volume, making them perfect ‘boosters’ for weaning meals.

🥜 Including lots of nutrient dense foods in the weaning diet can help us feel confident that babies are getting all they need to meet their growth potential, even if their appetite is small.

🥦 Does your baby have a small appetite for weaning foods? Let me know below.

🖊️ Guidelines around infant and child nutrition can be complex and sadly, so often they are seen as strict ‘rules’ that have to be stuck to.

👉 The reality? It’s ALL about context!

☀️ In spells of hot weather, the short term priority is almost always more about keeping little ones hydrated rather than optimising their nutrition.

👶🏽🧒 Good nutrition is about what happens over weeks and months, and not necessarily individual days.

💦 What have you been doing to keep your little ones well hydrated in the recent hot and sunny weather? Let me know below 👇

🖐️ Five of the easy peasy, and super nourishing meals I’ve been offering my little ones recently (as life has been esp hectic!).

👉 What we feed our little ones is really important, but it doesn’t need to mean making every meal from scratch or sacrificing your sanity.

🙂 Finding some simple nourishing meals that work for each individual child and family I support in the Little Nutrition clinic is a really important part of what I do. Because I totally get that the mental burden can just be pretty wild.

🤷‍♀️ Feeling a bit stuck at the pureed food stage is a common challenge. Many of the families I support in clinic go through phases where it feels like there’s no progress, and more solid/lumpier foods are being refused, causing gagging or repeatedly being spat out.

👉 Whilst these are ALL very normal during weaning, gradual texture progression can be a really helpful tool, allowing babies to slowly get used to lumps.

👶🏽 🥣 So, here are 4 of my favourite ways to support very gradual texture progression, by taking pureed foods and adding a little bit of something for texture (and extra nutrition, too!).

⭐️ Save for later, and share with a friend who’d like these simple ideas too.
