An interest in Musculoskeletal (MSK) assessment and management of persistent foot pain

26/02/2026

The Musculoskeletal (MSK) assessment.

It’s more than just looking at where something hurts. An MSK assessment looks at how the foot and ankle are functioning, how load is moving through the lower limb, and what factors might be contributing to ongoing pain.

This can include discussing activity levels, previous injuries, footwear, movement patterns, and carrying out a physical examination. From there, a treatment plan is built around the individual — which may involve rehab, load management, footwear advice, or in some cases shockwave therapy where appropriate.

Taking the time to assess properly helps make treatment more targeted and more effective.

Shockwave therapy, an effective treatment options for foot pain.

In clinic, I always start with a full musculoskeletal (MSK) assessment to understand what’s actually driving the pain. Sometimes the best progress comes from rehab, load management, footwear changes, or addressing contributing factors further up the chain.

Shockwave therapy is only considered when it fits the individual presentation and when other approaches haven’t been enough. It’s a tool — not a shortcut.

Taking the time to assess properly usually leads to better decisions and better outcomes.

One of the most common things I hear in clinic is:
“I thought this would just go away on its own.”

With foot, heel, and tendon pain, that’s often not the case — especially when symptoms have been there for months rather than weeks.

A proper musculoskeletal (MSK) assessment helps identify why the pain is persisting, not just where it hurts. From there, treatment might involve load management, rehab, footwear advice — and in some cases, shockwave therapy as part of a wider plan.

Shockwave isn’t suitable for everyone, and it’s not a quick fix, but for the right patient it can be a helpful option when progress has stalled.

Getting the assessment right early often makes all the difference.

Hi, I’m Caitlin 👋

I’m a Podiatrist working at Clare Johnson Podiatrist in Abergavenny.

My Interests include Musculoskeletal (MSK) assessment and supporting people who’ve been dealing with persistent foot, heel, or tendon pain. My approach is always assessment-led, and where appropriate this may include the use of Shockwave therapy as part of a wider treatment plan.

Alongside MSK work, I also provide routine podiatry care and nail surgery within the clinic.

I’m proud to work within a well-established local practice and to support patients as part of the team at Clare Johnson Podiatrist.
