Beacon Continuing Healthcare

Beacon Continuing Healthcare Beacon CHC supplies the NHSE Free Information & Advice Service for NHS Continuing Healthcare, and provides representation services across England.

Beacon was established in 2013 for the purpose of providing independent and high-quality support to individuals and their families in England who need help navigating the NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment, resolution and care planning / commissioning processes. Beacon evolved from a service offered by Age UK in Oxfordshire, and we now operate as a registered social enterprise, with a core set o

f ethical social objectives and values through which all of our work is delivered. For almost a decade, our team of specialist caseworkers have fought for people trying to navigate the maze of NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) funding. We are the only Continuing Healthcare support service that is endorsed by Age UK, Parkinson’s UK, the Spinal Injuries Association and EAC FirstStop. At Beacon we provide two separate services – we are the chosen supplier for the NHS England Free Information & Advice service for CHC, and we deliver representation and casework services in CHC across England and Wales.

When an individual’s health is rapidly deteriorating – and when they are considered to be approaching the end of their life (known as a ‘terminal phase’) – they may be eligible for fast-tracked NHS Continuing Healthcare.

Fast track paperwork should be completed by a healthcare professional who is involved in the individual’s care and able to make a diagnosis and prognosis.

If they recommend that the person is fast-tracked for Continuing Healthcare – because they meet certain specified conditions – the local Integrated Care Board (ICB) should accept and process the request immediately.

If you have been notified that a Checklist screening is due to take place and would like our help to ensure it is carried out correctly, you may want to consider our Checklist Advocacy Service, designed to support you with this first stage in the CHC process.

As part of this service our experienced caseworkers will help you to understand the Checklist criteria and to prepare for the screening, giving you the best chance possible of meeting the criteria to progress to the next stage of assessment. We can also help to arrange the Checklist.

Beacon has become increasingly aware of concerning compliancy trends regarding MDT assessments.

The MDT (Multidisciplinary Team) is the team of health and social care professionals who are brought together to assess a person’s care needs and make a recommendation about their eligibility for NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC). The team should usually comprise of the health and social care practitioners who are already involved in the delivery of the person’s care, treatment or assessment. The whole MDT should have a meaningful discussion about the nature, intensity, complexity and unpredictability of the individual’s needs across 12 categories, and make a recommendation to the Integrated Care Board (ICB) as to whether or not they think the individual meets the eligibility criteria.

In recent years Beacon has seen a trend in MDTs comprising only the minimum requirement (for example one nurse and one social worker), often without any meaningful attempts to engage a wider MDT. This means that in a large number of assessments key professionals who are knowledgeable about the individual’s care needs have not been directly consulted about the individual’s care needs as part of an assessment for CHC.

Retrospective assessments for Previously Unassessed Periods of Care (PUPoCs) are accessible for individuals who think they should have been considered for funding at the time, but were not. If an individual is found eligible, redress is made to cover the costs of care that should have been paid for by the funding.

Many CHC firms encourage individuals to apply for a PUPoC assessment whatever the costs, however in our experience these types of assurances should be approached with caution as historically only a very small percentage of individuals have been successful in their applications. No firm, regardless of credentials or experience, can guarantee a favourable outcome to an application.

The Department of Health and Social Care - DHSC has announced a 5.4% rise to the standard rate of NHS-funded Nursing Care (FNC), from £254.06 to £267.68 per week from 1 April 2026.

FNC is the contribution paid by the NHS toward the costs of a place in a care home with nursing for eligible people assessed as needing the help of a registered nurse. Tens of thousands of people in the UK receive FNC.
