Stop weekend weight gain
Whether your Saturdays and Sundays involve shopping, socialising or entertaining the kids, our stay-on-track strategies will make sure the wheels don’t come off your weight loss

Does this sound familiar? You’ve been sticking to plan all week, then along comes Friday evening when your inner rebel whispers in your ear that you’ve earned the right to relax and unwind.

If you go off track it can feel like a licence to carry on that way until Monday. And despite knowing that the best way to limit damage would be to draw a line in the sand, it can be hard to find the motivation to get back on it.

The secret is to start the way you mean to go on.

Foolproof Friday night
Get off to a great start by making sure your Friday-night feast is sorted well in advance. Make it something you love and you’ll be looking forward to it all day.

Cook a low Syn fakeaway, like chicken chow mein, beef curry or fish and chips.

You'll find more great fakeaway ideas in our recipe section

If you don’t feel like cooking, the Slimming World food range from Iceland is ideal for your Friday-night fast-food fix; for maximum filling power, enjoy with salad or cook a few veggies while you’re waiting for the microwave to ping.

Slimming World nutritionist Alexandra Clark says: ‘One great tip is to get ahead earlier in the week when your motivation is high and make up batches of your favourite meals and freeze them. Then, on Friday morning, take one out and let it defrost throughout the day, so all you have to do is reheat it.’

Supercharged Saturday
If you’re likely to spend your Saturday at the soft-play centre or park, you’re also likely to find yourself queueing for ice cream, crisps or sweets for the kids. Your phone is your saviour here!

It’s easy to make quick decisions on healthier alternatives by using the Food Search to check the Syn value of over 40,000 foods. For example, a Wall’s Cornetto Strawberry is 10 Syns, whereas a Wall’s Calippo Orange is 5 Syns.

Your Saturday spent with the children is the ideal time to schedule in some family friendly Body Magic, too. You could try:

heading out for a family bike ride

playing frisbee on the beach

taking the dog for a walk

kicking a ball about in the park

Shopping saviours
A day spent in town can be a real minefield, with fast-food outlets and convenience food around every corner. Look out for these quick and hassle-free bites:

Marks & Spencer, Boots, Tesco and large newspaper shops stock healthier snacks such as lean meats, seafood, salad bowls, sushi and fruit pots.

Choose a Subway salad filled with Free Food – check the Food Search to see how your favourite combo compares.

Navigating coffee and cake when hitting the shops can test even the most iron-willed of slimmers. Say, ‘Oh, go on then!’ and a slice of cake and a latte could be as many as 40 Syns. Tea and fruit tea (made with a teabag), Americanos and espressos are all Free – count any milk you use as part of your Healthy Extra ‘a’ choice.

If you fancy cake, plan for it or share one with your friend. Or, instead, treat yourself to something unrelated to food, such as a new lipstick, a DVD or a book.

Scan and plan with the Slimming World Scanner
The Slimming World Scanner – an easier way to shop, cook and eat the Food Optimising way – is now available on the Slimming World app! You can now scan an item’s barcode using your phone and the results will show if the product is Free, a Healthy Extra or has a Syn value. Add items to your online planner, helping with your day-to-day planning, shopping and Food Optimising 100%!

This is the only official Slimming World scanner available – anywhere! Every single product (and that’s over 50,000 so far) has been validated by our team of experts to guarantee you get the correct result every time you scan.

Night out on plan
When alcohol’s involved, the most important thing is to keep tabs on your tipping point. Research has found that the average tipping point for Slimming World members is around three large glasses of w**e – after which we could go on to consume an extra 6,300 calories through continued drinking, fast-food fixes and a morning-after fry-up. Find out more here.

Try these tips for keeping within your limits:

Steer clear of cocktails, b**rs and ciders, which tend to be higher in Syns – opt for spirits with diet mixers instead.

Add soda water to your w**e to make a long spritzer.

After last orders, planning ahead can help you navigate your way through kebab alley without arriving home with a doner. Alexandra Clark suggests, ‘Prepare something Free earlier in the day and heat it up when you get home. Home-made chilli and curry are great options.’

Sunday lunch – with all the trimmings
Sunday dinner can be the final hurdle. At home it’s easy to create the ultimate Food Optimising friendly roast, but dining elsewhere can be more of a challenge.

As well as this chicken dinner, you’ll find recipes for roast pork, beef and lamb in our recipe section

If you’re invited out for lunch and you’re comfortable with the hosts, let them know in advance that you’re trying to lose weight. They’ll be more than happy to serve up chicken with the skin removed or potatoes cooked without oil.

Not ready to have that conversation? If you arrive at someone’s house and the roast is already prepped, or you’re having lunch at a local carvery, fill your plate with as much Free and Speed Free Food as you can.

Slimming World recipes for students
Going to uni doesn’t have to mean waving goodbye to your weight loss! These delicious dishes and healthy hacks make slimming while studying easy and affordable

Maintaining a healthy weight can be challenging – especially if you’re learning how to food shop on a limited budget and fend for yourself in the kitchen. Throw in grab-and-go lunches between lectures, boozy nights out and takeaways in the taxi home, and it’s no wonder some students think losing weight and uni don’t mix.

That’s where Slimming World can help! Our healthy eating plan is so generous and flexible, it can easily work alongside any lifestyle and budget. Whether you’re starting as a fresher or heading back for another year, these cheap, simple and tasty dinners will make you the envy of your flatmates – and help you make sure you graduate looking and feeling great!

7 weight loss tips for students
At Slimming World, we have a deep understanding of the psychology of slimming and our NHS-backed eating plan is based on more than 50 years of experience, expertise and science. If you’d like to slim through your studies, our top tips will help you develop healthier habits.

Eat smart. Base your meals around staples like fruit and veg, pasta, rice and potatoes – they won’t break the bank and you can eat them freely when you’re Food Optimising.

Shop savvy. Choose less expensive types of meat and poultry, like skinless chicken thighs and lean mince (5% fat or less), and frozen or canned veg instead of fresh.

Understand your emotions. Does exam stress or missing home make you reach for high Syn food? Keep low Syn options close to hand, ready for those occasions.

Get rid of guilt. If you have a big night out or go off track one day, don’t beat yourself up. We’re all human. Simply get back on it as soon as you can and have confidence that the weight will come off again.

Make swaps at the Student Union. Mixing spirits with diet drinks, topping up your b**r with diet lemonade and alternating between alcohol and water are great ways to save a stack of Syns.

Get ready for a night out. Fill up first on one of the Food Optimising recipes below, so you’re less tempted by a takeaway later. If midnight munchies are a trigger for you, make sure you have an enticing meal to come home to.

Keep moving. Most unis and colleges have fantastic fitness facilities and sports teams – plus, walking to lectures and cycling around campus are great for improving your fitness.

Most of us lead busy lives, whether we’re working, studying, or looking after our family, pets and home. This can make it easy to file time for you under something for another day. However, looking after number one is essential for your physical and mental health – and investing time in yourself can help even the busiest week feel like less of a struggle.

Read on to discover some simple ways to make time for you…

Take mindful moments
Mindfulness is now something of a buzzword, and it’s a really simple concept. The NHS website explains mindfulness as: ‘Paying more attention to the present moment – to your own thoughts and feelings, and to the world around you.’

Finding moments to be mindful can help calm a busy mind and improve mental wellbeing. Perhaps focusing on the smells, sounds, tastes and textures while cooking dinner could help you to forget the stress of the day? Or maybe go for a mindful walk in the countryside or park, noticing the feel of the air and nature all around you?

Eating ‘mindfully’ – so really enjoying and appreciating what you’re eating – can also help you feel more satisfied and prevent overeating.

MORE FOR MEMBERS: Slimming World members will find ‘How mindfulness can support your slimming journey’ on our exclusive member-only website

Put it in the diary
A busy week can pass by in a blur, so scheduling some self-care slots is a way of ensuring that you don’t run out of time for you.

As many of us are creatures of habit, popping a regular lunchtime walk in your work diary, or a Friday catch-up call with a friend in your phone calendar, will ensure these things are on your radar every week.

Slimming World member Lucy () blocks out a day to focus on her own wellbeing. She shared her self-care list – and it looks like a day very well spent:

Focus on your goals
Taking the time to focus on your goals is key to achieving them. But don’t worry about having to tackle them in one big bite. Breaking goals into smaller steps will make them much easier to work towards, whether that’s spending an hour planning your meals for the week, doing week 1 of Couch to 5K, or booking your place in a Slimming World group.

Make time to move
It’s often easy to let being active slide down our list of priorities – yet moving more brings so many benefits for our health and overall wellbeing. As well as being fantastic for our physical health and supporting our weight loss, activity can boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy levels.

Booking a class or a swimming session, putting activity slots on your calendar and exercising with a friend are great ways to firm up your feel-good fitness plans.

Cycling helped Lois through her son’s leukaemia battle. She says: “I felt at peace riding around the beautiful lakes, fields and canals of the country park. Those 55 minutes became my time to relax and unwind, letting go of all life’s worries.”

Hone your hobbies
Time spent doing something you enjoy is never wasted, and many hobbies also have the added benefit of leaving you feeling calm and relaxed. If you’re looking for a new hobby, here are some suggestions to get you started:

colouring in: adult colouring books and fine-tip pens make this a mindful choice
crafting: creating stained glass is a growing trend
cross-stitch: you can buy some really cool kits online
gardening: make a mini garden for even the smallest space with a terrarium kit
photography: we all have a camera on our phones
soap making: create natural soaps and bath bombs for a relaxing self-care soak
journaling: use an app or go old school and put pen to paper
baking: get your bake on with this easy slimming-friendly chocolate madeleines recipe

Phone a friend
Who says me-time has to be spent alone? Chatting to a friend can be just as restorative. If you usually like to meet for coffee, walking and talking with a takeaway is a tonic for both body and soul. The magic of the mobile phone means you can do the walk and talk with faraway friends too.

Lou () enjoys her morning run so much more when her friend comes along, too!

Lou Bolton smiling on a pier with friend
You’ll always find a friendly ear at your local Slimming World group. A weekly meet-up with people who understand the challenges of weight loss can be a vital support – so much so that those who belong to a slimming group, alongside people who care and share their goals, are more likely to succeed than those who don’t. That’s well worth making time for.

Kick back and relax
Sometimes, all you really need to do is absolutely nothing, and that’s OK! Give yourself permission to forget that to-do list and put your feet up – you could actually be making your weight loss goals easier to reach.

If you love a relaxing read, you’ll find lots of slimming success stories on the blog, and even more on our exclusive member website. Lauren () has got the right idea – she loves enjoying lunch in the sunshine and having a flick through Slimming World Magazine.
