One of the great paradoxes of being a parent is that I love this little person more than I ever thought possible, yet somehow I have to remember that he doesn’t actually belong to me 🤷🏾♂️🧐.
Kahlil Gibran wrote that our children come through us, but they are not ours ✨. They belong to life. I understand this as love without possession. Zaccy is another traveller who, for a little while, has been placed in my care. My job is to protect him, prepare him for life and help him become strong enough to eventually walk his own road.
But somewhere in all of that, something else is happening. Zaccy is raising me too 😵💫❤️
He expose’s my patience (or lack of), my fears, my need to control things and my attachment. He gives my life a sense of purpose he was never actually responsible for giving me, and somehow, just by walking beside his narrow behind, I have grown too.
And then comes the cruel and beautiful paradox of parenting 😵💫⚽️📍.
When they’re little, love means holding on. As they grow, that very same love means learning to let go 😭😤
And I already know that letting go is going to be the hardest thing I will ever have to do. But I’m hoping I will learn that along the way too 🫶🏽✨
