Patients with prostate cancer who undergo a robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy previously had to return to hospital for a trial without catheter 7-10 days after surgery.

Erick Entrata outlines the results of a service improvement project undertaken to investigate whether self-trial without catheter at home was feasible for patients:

New guidance from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) covers diagnosing and managing renal cell carcinoma in people aged 18 and over.

The most important changes to practice are:

• All people with renal cell carcinoma should have support from a clinical nurse specialist throughout their care

• Healthcare professionals should identify people with suspected renal cell carci-noma who could benefit from having a biopsy and discuss this with them to help them make an informed decision

• Active surveillance, thermal ablation and stereotactic ablative radiotherapy should be considered for managing localised small renal masses when surgery is not needed, possible or suitable.

Patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer now have access to a new treatment.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recommended that durvalumab can be used as an option with gemcitabine and cisplatin for treatment before surgery, and then alone after surgery, of resectable muscle-invasive bladder cancer in adults.
