What if your thoughts had the power to create your destiny?

Well maybe they do because when you repeat an affirmation, your brain processes it as a literal reality and triggers a measurable cascade of neurological, neurochemical, and physical changes, systematically altering your biological stress response and building overall mental and physical resilience.

Chronic stress keeps you stuck in fight/flight, and constantly floods your body with adrenaline and cortisol. By reassuring the brain that life is good, affirmations signal the body to drop into a rest/repair state, lowering your heart rate, releasing muscular tension, and deepening your breathing.

Functional MRI studies have shown
that affirmations light up the same brain regions that react to rewarding experiences, and actively down-regulate the brain’s alarm system responsible for the fight/flight response, which dampens negative rumination and anxiety, whilst increasing dopamine and serotonin, naturally elevating mood, boosting motivation, and alleviating feelings of depression.

Continually repeating affirmations creates and strengthens new neural pathways, making optimistic thinking and emotional regulation easier to access over time.

By altering brain chemistry and calming the nervous system, affirmations also yield tangible physical health benefits, like:

Lowering baseline cortisol, which protects your body and brain from the toxic wear and tear of chronic stress.

Reducing blood pressure, therefore protecting long-term heart health.

Lowering inflammatory markers, which are otherwise elevated by chronic negative thinking.

Altering how the brain processes physical discomfort, therefore reducing the intensity of chronic pain.

So, even if you don’t believe that positive thinking can have a beneficial effect on your life, there is enough scientific evidence to prove that it creates tangible changes in your physiology, so it’s got to be worth a try!

Anxiety comes at inconvenient moments, when we don’t always have the time or space to shake it out, do some EFT, or lay with our legs up the wall, so this is a simple nervous system regulating exercise that can be done anywhere.

Simply take a big breath in through your nose, and let out a big sigh, whilst dropping your shoulders, and gently banging your chest.

This gentle thumping helps reduce anxiety by providing a rhythmic sensory anchor that signals safety to the nervous system, as it brings awareness back to the physical body, which interrupts anxious thoughts.

The predictable touch and pressure stimulates sensory pathways near the heart and sternum, shifting the body from its stressed fight/flight state, to a calmer rest and repair mode.

The physical movement also helps shake off stored muscle tension in the chest and diaphragm, that often accompanies anxiety and shallow breathing.

In the first 30 Seconds your breathing should begin to naturally slow down and deepen.
After 1 Minute the feelings of anxiety should start to fade.
After 2 Minutes your heart rate should stabilise, and you should start feeling more grounded. You might naturally do a deep sigh or yawn, and your shoulders and jaw muscles might start to relax

If you don’t feel a difference after 5 minutes, then stop and try a different grounding tool like humming or alternate nostril breathing.

Try it next time you feel anxious. SHARE with anyone else who might benefit, and FOLLOW for more nervous system content 🤍
