Earlier this week we talked about the benefits of oily fish for eye health.

I’m curious…

💬 Do you currently eat oily fish regularly, occasionally, or not at all?

And if you do eat it, what’s your favourite way to have it?

🐟 One of the simplest foods you can eat to support your eyes?

Oily fish

Your retina contains very high levels of DHA — an omega-3 fat found in oily fish. In fact, DHA is a major structural component of the retina and helps support the function of the light-sensitive cells in the eye.

Research has also linked higher omega-3 intake with a lower risk of progression of AMD.

Oily fish also provides EPA, another Omega-3 fat, which helps regulate inflammation in the body — important because chronic inflammation and oxidative stress play a key role in macular degeneration.

Good options include:

• Salmon
• Mackerel
• Anchovies
• Sardines
• Herring

Otherwise known as the SMASH fish!

Aim for 2 portions per week if you can.
But even adding one portion regularly is a brilliant step in the right direction.

Tinned fish can be a really simple, affordable option too.

Have you eaten oily fish this week? If so, what did you have? Let us know below! 🐟✨

AMD is not just about getting older, unfortunate genetics or bad luck.

Yes, genetics can play a role.
But genes are not destiny.

A simple way to think about it is:

➡️ Genes may load the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger.

What’s happening inside your body day to day matters!

Things like:

• Inflammation
• Blood sugar balance
• Nutrients
• Oxidative stress
• Overall metabolic health

all influence what’s happening at the back of the eye.

That’s why two people with similar genetics can have very different outcomes 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

And this is the encouraging part:
There is a lot you can influence! 💪🏻

❤️ Your daily choices matter more than many people realise.

❓Does this way of thinking about AMD make you feel more hopeful and empowered?

Some of you may still be cooking with sunflower oil or other ‘vegetable oils’.

These oils are highly processed and can be more prone to oxidation when heated.

That can contribute to oxidative stress in the body
— a process linked with ageing and macular degeneration.

Instead, try swapping to:

• Extra virgin olive oil
• Butter
• Ghee
• Coconut oil
• Avocado oil
• Animal fats such as tallow, duck fat or lard

These fats are generally more stable for cooking and less processed.

It’s a small change that can make a big difference over time.

What do you currently cook with most often? Do you need to make a change? 🤔

Inflammation is one of the key drivers behind macular degeneration…

But what actually causes inflammation in the first place?

A lot of it comes down to the environment we create inside the body every day.

Things like:

• Blood sugar spikes
• Ultra-processed foods
• Poor sleep
• Chronic stress
• Smoking
• Nutrient deficiencies

can all increase stress and inflammation inside the body.

Over time, that can create stress and damage in delicate tissues like the retina.

The encouraging part?

👉 You can influence this.

Every meal is EITHER

✔ helping calm inflammation

OR

✔ adding more stress to the system

And those daily choices really do add up over time.

Even small changes can start shifting the body in a better direction.

👇 Drop a YES below if you’re committed to creating a healthier, less inflammatory environment inside your body ✨

AMD is (partly) an energy problem…

This is something most people have never been told.

👉 Your retina is one of the most energy-hungry tissues in your body.

It’s working constantly:

⚡️Processing light

⚡️Repairing itself

⚡️Clearing waste

To do that, it needs a steady supply of energy.

That energy comes from tiny structures in your cells called mitochondria
(think of them as your body’s “power stations”).

When everything is working well:

✔ Energy is produced

✔ Waste is cleared

✔ Cells repair themselves

But when energy production drops:

⬇️ Waste builds up

⬇️ Repair slows down

⬇️ Damage starts to accumulate

Over time, this contributes to the changes seen in AMD. And here’s the key point:

👉 Diet and lifestyle directly affect how well this system works! Things like blood sugar balance, inflammation, nutrient intake, toxins, stress, and the foods you eat every day all influence how well your cells can produce energy, repair themselves, clear waste, and ultimately do their job properly! ❤️

If you’re wondering where to start with all of this, keep it really simple.

👉 Start with real food.

Food that looks like food!

Not things made in factories with long ingredient lists.

❗️Think:

Meat
Fish
Eggs
Vegetables
Fruit
Nuts, seeds,
Legumes
Dairy (if you tolerate it)
Olive oil, butter

You get the picture!

You don’t need complicated rules or perfect meal plans.

Just begin by asking:

“Is this real food, or is this something that’s been heavily processed?”

Because here’s the key:

Ultra-processed foods increase inflammation and oxidative stress
— the same processes involved in macular degeneration.

Real food supports:

✔ Steady energy for your cells (including your eyes)
✔ Your body’s ability to repair and maintain your eyes
✔ Lower inflammation
✔ The nutrients your eyes rely on every day

Every time you choose real food, you’re supporting your body — and your eyes 😊❤️

Most people are told to “monitor” their macular degeneration.

And that’s it.

Wait. Watch. Hope for the best.

But here’s the part that often gets missed…

AMD doesn’t just happen.
It’s influenced by what’s going on in your body day to day —
things like inflammation, blood sugar, and nutrition.

That means this:

❤️ There is more you can influence than you might think.

Your eyes rely on:

• Good energy production
• Low inflammation
• Stable blood sugar
• Proper nutrition

When those things are working well, you’re creating a much better environment for your eyes.

This isn’t about quick fixes or miracle supplements.

It’s about supporting your body properly —
because your eyes depend on it.

Small, consistent changes really do add up.

👌🏼 So rather than just waiting and watching… start today. Even one small change is a step towards supporting your eyes.
