We want to share with you our wonderful Promise Champion for this Month - Service Manager, Demi D'Arcy. Demi was nominated for her commitment to the Promise "To speak up when something is wrong" by Michelle Francis. Below is the nomination that led us to choosing Demi!
I would like to nominate Demi D'Arcy for embodying our Promise to speak up if something is wrong. Having recently taken over a service from another provider, Demi quickly identified serious concerns regarding the environment in which people were living. She recognised that the conditions were unacceptable, unhygienic, and potentially harmful to the wellbeing and safety of the individuals supported there.
Rather than accepting the situation, she acted immediately and raised her concerns through the appropriate channels. When one individual was discharged from hospital and returned to a flat that was not fit for habitation, he became extremely distressed and expressed suicidal intentions. Demi acted swiftly, contacting the Local Authority and Safeguarding teams to ensure the person's immediate safety and wellbeing. As a direct result of her actions, emergency respite accommodation was arranged, providing the individual with a safe place to stay whilst longer-term solutions were explored.
Demi's willingness to speak up has also led to wider safeguarding intervention for all residents living within the building. The Local Authority and housing provider are now working together to address the concerns, with consideration being given to temporarily relocating residents while a deep clean and further investigations take place. Demi demonstrated courage, professionalism and genuine compassion throughout. She advocated for vulnerable people when they needed someone to speak on their behalf and took decisive action to protect their wellbeing. Her actions reflect exactly what our Promise stands for and have made a significant difference to the lives of the people we support. Demi truly exemplifies the Promise: "I promise to speak up if something is wrong."
