Why is it so incredibly easy to spot the exact thing holding your best friend back, but nearly impossible to see what is blocking your own path?

For years, I was completely blind to my own resistance. When I was battling severe Type 2 diabetes in the late 1990s and early 2000s, I genuinely believed my only problem was a lack of discipline. I would follow rigid diets, exercise relentlessly, and see progress. But the moment life threw a curveball my way, the illness would come roaring back.

I was trapped in a slough of despond, constantly frustrated with myself. I thought I was failing. What I could not see was that my subconscious mind was actually trying to protect me. It had created a familiar, protective space around the illness, and every time I experienced stress, it pulled me right back into that physical state to keep me "safe."

I could not see the pattern until someone else pointed it out to me. When I finally learned to look at my body's reactions with curiosity, not blame, everything changed. I began to release those trapped emotional patterns. I became unburdened, and the physical sensation of feeling lighter was profound.

Because we are so close to our own lives, we often need a mirror to see what is truly going on.

I was sitting with my coffee this morning, reflecting on the unique struggles of the "strong" ones in our families and workplaces.

I was sitting quietly with my coffee this morning, thinking back to a very difficult Christmas several years ago.

We were watching Home Alone 2, and during the ad break, my son turned to me and asked when I was having my leg chopped off. He had recently seen my friend lose a limb to Type 2 diabetes, and in his innocent, childlike way, he assumed the same fate was waiting for me.

It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to hear. But looking back now, I realise it was the catalyst that forced me to stop treating my body like a broken machine and start treating it like a messenger.

When we face chronic health issues, we often fall into a cycle of immense self-blame. We think we are failing because we cannot stick to a rigid routine. What we fail to realise is that our subconscious mind is incredibly powerful. It holds onto old emotional traumas and builds a physical reality around them to keep us exactly where we are. It isn't sabotage; it is a misguided attempt to keep us safe.

When I finally allowed myself to look at my diabetes with curiosity, not blame, everything shifted. Sometimes, the body has to go through a healing crisis before it can truly let go of what it has been holding onto. But once you release that trapped energy, the feeling of becoming unburdened is indescribable.
