What is NLP and how can it be of value to kids?
If you’ve ever heard of the word NLP, you have probably secretly wondered what it is, or what the letters NLP stand for? You may have also wondered if it could or can be relevant to you or help you in your own lives.
If you searched on google or have heard people speaking about NLP, you would more likely think it is only used for adults (whether within their personal or professional life) to provide them with tools or techniques to enable them to be successful.
However NLP, can also be useful for children to teach them techniques which can help them: increase their confidence, improve their self- esteem, process emotions like anger, anxiety and stress, become more motivated in their school- work , making friends and so much more.
Now We Know What NLP Can Do, It Would Be Important To Know What It Is?
NLP stands for:
Neuro - of the mind: your thoughts, beliefs, values.
Linguistic - language used based on our thoughts and beliefs and how you communicate with others.
Programming - how our patterns of thoughts, behaviour and emotions affect our lives.
It was created by Richard Bandler who was a Mathematician and John Grinder, a linguist, who observed therapists who were successful in helping particular patients deal with specific problems.
NLP is really focused on how to achieve excellence in our lives. NLP teaches that ‘excellence’ can be such modelled. This means that if we wanted to become better at a particular task or hone a particular by we would need to model a person who is excellent in those areas. This would be done through: observation, replication, utilisation and feedback.
How Can NLP Help My Child?
NLP can help your child in many ways as previously listed above. But one of the most important thing to consider and remember is that children, although small in size, encounter similar emotions to adults. Many adults understand this when it comes to feelings such as joy or sadness.
However, feeling depressed, being anxious about important things happening in their lives, stress, anger among others are emotions that they have to deal with as well. The issue for children is that due to biological reasons (parts of their brains have not yet matured) and lack of experience makes them inept when it comes to processing these emotions. This is where NLP comes in, as there are techniques that they can learn which will enable them to do so positively and safely.
Where Can My Child Learn These Techniques?
I created FunspiR Confidence Academy as an option for parents whose children were struggling with self-esteem and confidence, anxiety, stress and who were in desperate need of help within these areas. As a mother, I know all too well many of the frustrations held by parents who feel ill-equipped to help their children in dealing with powerful emotions and fulfilling their potential. We combine techniques from NLP, Growth Mindset & Mindfulness.
I am trained in NLP and Mindfulness , have experience in working with children in different settings from Nursery up to 17 years. I also have a background in Media & Communications with current DBS and Safeguarding.
