Let's talk Microneedling.......to numb or not to numb?

Microneedling has gained immense popularity for its incredible skin rejuvenation benefits. But one question lingers in the minds of many clients (and practitioners): should you numb the area before treatment?

From our research, there is no correct answer here so we assess each client individually. We have many that don’t numb……..and many that do!
But let’s dig in to the subject a bit further so together we can make an informed decision on your next treatment.

Using numbing cream (topical anaesthetic) for Microneedling is a standard practice designed to increase comfort, but some believe it comes with a trade-off regarding the treatment's efficacy and physiological response. While it makes the procedure, which can be painful, much more tolerable, some experts suggest it may slightly reduce the intensity of the collagen-inducing inflammatory response.

Pros of Numbing with Microneedling
✔️ Reduced Discomfort: Numbing cream makes the procedure comfortable or tolerable, even with deeper needle settings for scars.
✔️ Enhanced Experience: It turns a potentially uncomfortable experience into a more manageable one, reducing anxiety.

Cons of Numbing with Microneedling
❌️ Potential Reduction in Efficacy: Some evidence suggests that topical anaesthetic can constrict blood vessels, which might reduce the skin’s inflammatory response and, consequently, slightly reduce collagen production.
❌️ Inhibits Natural Feedback: The numbing cream can mask the skin's reaction, making it difficult for us to see the level of erythema (redness) that indicates a successful, effective, and deep-enough treatment.
❌️ Risk of Over/Undertreatment: Because we cannot rely on your pain feedback or the skin's natural redness, there is a risk of over-treating (causing more damage) or under-treating (getting fewer results).
❌️ Increased Potential for Swelling: There is some anecdotal evidence that numbing cream may increase swelling and slightly prolong downtime.
❌️ Chemical Sensitivity: Patients with sensitive skin or allergies to lidocaine/benzocaine may experience adverse reactions.

Our personal preference is to embrace the process in its most authentic form and not to numb. By choosing not to numb, we can better monitor your reactions, ensuring safety throughout the procedure. This allows us to adjust as needed and provides valuable feedback on the treatment experience.
But rest assured, numbing will always be an option so we look forward to discussing this with you at your next Microneedling appointment 😊
