🧠 Diet & ADHD: Can What You Eat Make a Difference? 🍽️

Did you know that what you eat can play a role in managing ADHD symptoms?
While diet alone isn’t a cure, certain foods can help improve focus and control impulses. But beware, sugar and ultra-processed foods (UPFs) aren’t your best friends. 🛑

💡 Key Nutrients to Help with ADHD:

🐟 Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts – may improve focus and reduce impulsivity.
🥩 Protein: Eggs, lean meats, and beans support neurotransmitter production and stabilise blood sugar, helping with attention.
💪🏼 Iron & Zinc: Essential for dopamine production – linked to focus and self-regulation.

⚡ Potential Triggers to Watch Out For:

• Artificial Additives: Can worsen hyperactivity in sensitive individuals.
• Refined Sugar: Though it doesn’t cause ADHD, sugar spikes may increase hyperactivity.
• Food Sensitivities: Gluten, dairy, and other allergens could impact behaviour.

📝 Dietary Tips for Managing ADHD:

• Elimination Diets: Remove triggers like additives or allergens to reduce symptoms.
• Regular Meals: Balanced meals with protein, fibre, and complex carbs to help stabilise blood sugar.
• Caffeine: Small doses may help focus, but not recommended for kids.

❗ Remember, diet alone can’t cure ADHD.
Effective treatment combines therapy, routines, and possibly medication.

1–7 June 2026 | Volunteers’ Week

Volunteers’ Week is a national celebration recognising the incredible contribution of volunteers across the UK.

Each year, around two million people give their time, energy, and skills to support communities, charities, and public services — including vital support across the NHS and many other organisations. Their dedication plays a key role in strengthening services, supporting staff, and improving experiences for the people who rely on them.

At ISSAC, we extend our sincere thanks to all volunteers for their generosity, commitment, and the positive impact they make every day.
