England World Cup hat-trick hero and Ashton’s greatest son Sir Geoff Hurst is coming home!
This summer, football really is coming home to Ashton-under-Lyne.
We are thrilled to announce that Ashton’s very own Sir Geoff Hurst, England’s legendary World Cup hat-trick hero, will be returning to his hometown on June 6th for a nostalgic and unforgettable homecoming celebration.
As the nation gears up for the World Cup, Sir Geoff will be back where it all began, joining us in Ashton for an unforgettable day of celebration, community pride, and football history. It’s going to feel like 1966 all over again, as the streets will be draped with flags and bursting with pride.
This landmark event will also see the unveiling of a brand-new mural in Ashton town centre, honouring Sir Geoff and celebrating one of the greatest moments in our history. With national media coverage, this promises to be a huge day for Ashton and for football fans everywhere.
Join us on June 6th from 12pm–4pm as Sir Geoff takes part in:
⚽️ An exclusive interview outside his childhood home with national and regional media
⚽️ The unveiling of a giant mural tribute celebrating Sir Geoff and England’s finest hour!
⚽️ The grand opening of Ashton’s new World Cup fan zone
⚽️ A walk through the town centre, including Stamford Street, Market Avenue and Old Street, showcasing key regeneration sites, with a penalty shootout along the way!
⚽️ A Q&A and autograph signing session in Clarence Arcade (ticketed event – limited tickets on sale Monday)
This homecoming has been in the works for some time, and with the World Cup beginning, there couldn’t be a better moment to welcome Sir Geoff back to Ashton.
More than just a celebration, this event is about inspiring the next generation—showing young people across Tameside that dreams can become reality, and that someone from their own hometown can go on to shine on the world’s biggest stage.
