Phew, what a week it has been! ✨
It’s been an absolute whirlwind of a week, but my goodness, it reminds me exactly why I fell in love with Occupational Therapy in the first place. 💼❤️
Here’s a little glimpse into what keeping me busy over the last few days:
🧠 Sensory Support: Conducted sensory assessments for the wonderful students at the First Steps Together group, and ran some high-energy sensory circuit sessions!
🏡 Stroke Rehabilitation: Worked alongside two incredible ladies on their mobility and daily living skills, helping them regain independence.
📝 New Beginnings: Picked up a new case for a lovely lady who requires specialised neurological cognitive work.
🧒 Fun & Functional: Wrapped up with two children, working on homework-based therapy to make learning accessible and engaging.
Behind every single one of these sessions is a mountain of prep work, documentation, and admin, but seeing everyone thrive and smash their goals makes every second worth it. 🌟
To all my clients this week: you are doing amazing. Happy Friday, everyone!

Through Sensory Understanding
Leeanne and I (Gaynor) had the absolute privilege of spending time with the incredible staff at our local school with first steps together! We ran a dedicated training session focused on the vital role of Occupational Therapy (OT) in education and how sensory assessments can completely transform a child’s learning experience.

As OTs, our ultimate goal is to help children fully participate in the "occupations" of school life, whether that’s writing, playing at recess, or staying focused during a lesson. A huge piece of that puzzle comes down to how a child processes the world around them.

Every classroom is filled with sensory data: bright fluorescent lights, humming computers, scraping chairs, and the textures of different learning materials. For many children, processing all of this background noise takes an immense amount of energy.

During the training, we broke down how sensory assessments help us decode a child's behavior:
The "Sensory Seeker": The child who can't sit still or constantly touches things might actually be craving more sensory input just to feel grounded.
The "Sensory Avoider": The child who covers their ears or melts down during transitions might be completely overwhelmed by environmental sensory overload.
By using structured sensory assessments, we can stop guessing and start pinpointing exactly why a student might be struggling to regulate their attention or behavior.

The best part of the session was collaborating with the teachers and support staff to brainstorm practical, real-world classroom adjustments. We explored how simple changes, like creating quiet sensory corners, using active seating options, or introducing structured sensory breaks, can make a massive difference.
A huge thank you to the school staff for their energy, insightful questions, and deep commitment to creating an inclusive environment where every unique learner can thrive. We left feeling incredibly inspired!

I wanted to take a moment to celebrate a recent milestone that truly highlights the power of what we do as Occupational Therapists. I’ve been collaborating closely with the wonderful team at First Steps Together Group to support an 8-year-old boy who was having a really difficult time.
When I first took on his case, he was incredibly hard to reach, showing a lot of hostility and completely avoiding any interaction. The team brought me on board to conduct a sensory assessment so we could unlock better ways to support his needs.

As OTs, we know that a formal assessment is only as good as the trust behind it! Instead of jumping straight into testing, I focused entirely on building a comfortable, secure connection. We spent our initial time together focusing on low-demand, using my sensory toolbox and enjoying sensory circuits

Today, everything clicked! We opened up my Sensory Toolbox, and he had a fantastic time exploring and interacting with all the different sensory tools and aids. To wrap up the session, we did some sensory circuits which he absolutely loved and leaned into.
Because he finally felt safe and comfortable with me, he happily agreed to the assessment—and we flew through the entire thing in a single session! He walked away feeling incredibly proud of himself, and I couldn't be happier.

With the assessment successfully wrapped up, I’m now focusing on drafting the practical tools to help him thrive at school:

Detailed Sensory Assessment & Report 📊 and Classroom Guidance" Sheet 🏫 (a quick, practical guide so his teachers know exactly how to support him daily!)
A massive thank you to First Steps Together Group for partnering with us. This is such a powerful reminder that when we lead with trust, the breakthroughs follow! 💚

As an Occupational Therapist, my goal is always to help individuals thrive in the environments that matter most to them. For children, that primary environment is school! 🎒✏️

In this session, I'm completing a sensory assessment with a student within a school setting.

Every single day, our brains are flooded with sensory information from the world around us, sights, sounds, textures, and movements. While most people process this seamlessly, some children experience sensory processing challenges. They might find certain textures distressing, become easily overwhelmed by classroom noise, or conversely, need extra physical movement just to help them focus.

During a school-based assessment, I look at:

👐Tactile Exploration: How a child responds to different textures (like the sensory brushes, textured blocks, and koosh balls Leeanne is using here).

🗣️Environmental Impact:
How the classroom setup, lighting, and noise levels affect their ability to attend to tasks.

🏫Functional Performance: How sensory preferences impact everyday school activities like writing, sitting at a desk, or playing with peers.

By taking the therapy out of a clinical room and directly into the educational environment, I can work collaboratively with teachers and parents. This enables me to implement practical, real-time strategies, like sensory breaks, specialised seating, or tactile toolkits, ensuring every child has the right environment to learn, play, and grow with confidence.
