Hip facts!

➡️ Certain movements provoke hip pain and understanding which movements cause you increase pain allows you to manage a rehabilitation plan more effectively. Load management is key.

➡️ Crossing your legs is not helpful in patients who have hip osteoarthritis and FAI. Avoid this as it puts too much stress on the joint.

➡️ standing on the spot on one leg is also provocative especially in people with gluteal tendinopathy.

➡️ Low seats and sofas can cause additional load through the joint. Try sitting with a cushion on the chair to increase height.

➡️ Side sleepers can often find their pain increases due to compressive load and this consequently increases pain, particularly in patients with gluteal tendinopathy.

➡️ Certain stretches are provocative in particular those those that stretch the IT band.

➡️ Deep squatting causes increase in pain.

This is what happens when you have a disc injury. Some of the disc contents push through and can compress or irritate the nerve and this is what gives you pain.

But, it’s important to remember that our spines are robust and research shows that over time the ‘contents’ of the disc gets re-absorbed.

It’s the case of needing to BEND to MEND.

It’s is advisable if you’re struggling with back pain to get advise from a health care professional ( ).

➡️ Remember the back is robust and its job is to bend!

➡️ Moving with a stiff back (often a protective movement) will increase risk of injury and in those people who have back pain it will reinforce poor movement patterns and consequently lead to a cycle of chronic pain.

➡️ You’ve got to bend to mend.

➡️ Motion is lotion.

People who are Neurodivergence have increased risk of chronic pain and joint hypermobility.

People who are neurodivergent can:

➡️ Have increased sensitivity such as to bright lights, and strong smells. This hypersensitivity alters brain response to touch. It can alter how the brain processes pain - the response is heightened in this population. A bit like a dial that is turned up to its highest level.

➡️ Have a hypersensitive central nervous system.

➡️ Have widespread chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia and joint hypermobility. Also other conditions such as IBS can be seen in this group of population due to the ‘wind up’ response of the central nervous system.

➡️ Can develop a condition known as POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). This is when the person stands up and there is an abnormal change in blood pressure and can faint as a result.

➡️ have an impact on the autonomic functions such as breathing, blood pressure.

These issues can show how closely the physical and neurological systems work together and how there is an impact on these body functions that can occur in the neurodivergent population.

Please note that these issues do not affect everyone who is neurodivergent! There is still a lot of research to do.
