WHY DOES MY BODY TENSE UP AROUND CERTAIN PEOPLE?
Your body may tense around certain people because your nervous system detects potential threat or a lack of safety, sometimes before your conscious mind understands why.
Why this can happen:
Subconscious Threat Detection:
Your brain continuously processes facial expressions, tone of voice, body language and changes in behaviour. Some of these cues can activate a stress response before you consciously recognise them.
Past Associations:
A person’s voice, mannerisms or behaviour may resemble someone connected with a difficult past experience. Your nervous system can respond to that similarity even when the present situation is different.
Fear of Judgement:
If you expect criticism, rejection or confrontation, the body may become physically guarded …. tightening the jaw, shoulders, stomach or muscles and changing your breathing.
Inconsistency or Unpredictability:
When someone’s words, expressions and behaviour don’t seem to match, or you don’t know how they are likely to respond, your nervous system may remain more alert.
Previous Boundary Violations:
If someone has repeatedly ignored your boundaries, your body may anticipate another uncomfortable interaction and prepare itself before anything has actually happened.
These reactions are part of the body’s protective stress system.
They don’t always mean that someone is dangerous …. but they can be useful information to notice and explore.
Sometimes the body reacts before the conscious mind understands why.
