Even being slightly above your ideal weight can affect your feet. Extra weight increases the pressure on them when you stand or move, putting stress on the skin, bones, and overall foot structure. Losing weight can help protect your feet and may also reduce the risk of conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

When the weather is beautiful, it is tempting to keep your feet cool. But bear in mind: flip-flops offer little arch support, heel stability, or shock absorption. Keeping them on requires your toes to grip, which can alter your natural stride. Over time, this lack of support may strain muscles, irritate tendons, and increase the risk of slips or falls.

Ulcers can result from prolonged pressure and are more likely to occur in people with:

• Diabetes
• Neuropathy
• Vascular disease

If you think you may have an ulcer, contact your GP promptly. Do not ignore it, as early advice and treatment are important.

One of the most important practices for maintaining healthy feet when living with diabetes is inspecting your feet every day. Diabetes can cause neuropathy (nerve damage where basically you may not feel what you should feel the way you should feel it).
By inspecting your feet every day, you can identify and address small concerns such as a splinter, cut or blister before they turn into more serious problems. To check the bottom of your feet, use a mirror or ask someone to help you by looking at your feet for you.
