Play doesn’t need to look educational for learning to be taking place.

Building a tower can support problem-solving and positional language. Pretend play can develop vocabulary and storytelling. Rolling a ball can introduce turn-taking and shared attention.

You also don’t need specialist or expensive toys. What matters most is that the activity interests your child and creates an opportunity to explore, interact and communicate.

While playing, children can develop their vocabulary, practise taking turns, explore new ideas and learn how to solve problems. Because the activity is enjoyable and meaningful to them, they may also feel more confident communicating and trying something new.

Your child’s vocabulary grows through everyday conversations, not only books, flashcards or planned learning activities.

Try naming what your child notices, introducing new words while you cook, shop or play, and repeating those words in different situations.

Instead of simply saying “Look at the dog,” you might say, “Look at the enormous, fluffy dog running beside the gate.”

Small additions help children connect words with real objects, actions and experiences. Just remember to pause and give them time to respond too.

When preparing a child for Reception, it is easy to focus on recognising letters, counting or writing their name.

However, school also involves participating in a new social environment.

Children will play alongside others, join shared mealtimes, manage unfamiliar routines and need to communicate when something is difficult.

You can help your child practise these skills through everyday experiences:

Play simple turn-taking games together
Share mealtimes at a table when possible
Let them practise using cutlery and opening their lunchbox
Model phrases such as “Can you help me?” and “I don’t understand”
Give them opportunities to play and communicate with other children
