Now, I know, I am always banging on about how Mindfulness isn't a cure for anything. It is always and forever complimentary to tried and tested treatments like counseling, medication etc.

So why does it need to be trauma-informed?

The reality is that some people find mindfulness after experiencing difficulties in life. Therefore, it is incredibly important to have at least a degree of awareness of how trauma manifests.

In the context of mindfulness practice, being trauma-informed means that instructions are offered in such a way that it creates a sense of safety, choice and respect for personal autonomy at all time.

A few examples are:
-Practising with eyes open or closed
-Reminding participants that they don't need to do what is suggested if it's too uncomfortable
- Seating participants in a way that the path to the door is clear to them

You are ALWAYS in charge of your own practice and of your own body ❤️💜🧡

Yeah yeah, I know, there is a letter "I" in it. (I see you, all my neurospicy folks 🩷)

But what I'm talking about is that when you listen to a guided meditation, you'll often find that the concept of an "I" is avoided.

Instructions often sound like
"Bringing attention to..."
"Allowing what arises..."

What's all that about? Aren't we trying to figure out what is going on inside? Why don't we want to look at "me"?

Well, have you ever found yourself so immersed in a way of feeling that it feels like that's all you are? Perhaps it was sadness, perhaps it was joy, perhaps it was any of the myriad emotions we experience as humans.

We do that all the time, to a degree. We feel a thing and then we believe we are that thing, when in fact, we are just experiencing the thing. The English language even confirms it:
" I AM sad" " I AM happy" " I AM angry"

If we are absolutely convinced that we are what we are feeling then it becomes very difficult to look at it with a degree of objectivity. This then spins a whole load of stories of whether we are good or bad, all defined by emotions we experience.

In Mindfulness meditation, we aim to observe what is happening. As an experience , as a reaction, as something that is passing.

With that in mind, when guiding meditations, we try and take the emphasis away from anything being personal. The experience isn't who you are, it's what is happening to you.

You are always so much more than your current experience 💙💚💜

Did you see that I'm doing a From the Ground Up workshop in two weeks?
Are you maybe hesitating to book in? Not sure what to expect? Not sure if you're ready for it?

Let me answer some questions that may help,

Q: What level of yoga practice is this aimed at?
A: It's for anyone with a basic yoga practice — even if you only attend a class once a week and have been doing that for a few months. It’s equally great for long‑time practitioners who want to dive deeper, explore the finer details of poses, or refresh their understanding.

Q: Is it strenuous?
A: Nah. We'll do gentle warmups before each pose but there will be a lot of discussion and time to try things

Q: I see it's a 2 hour workshop, are we going to be doing yoga the whole time?
A: No, this is not a continuous practice. There are plenty of breaks for discussion, questions, and tea.

Q: Do I need to bring anything for this?
A: No, we have mats and props you can use, but you're welcome to bring your own. You're welcome to bring a notepad if you like making notes , but it's certainly not a requirement

Not sure whether Power Flow is for you? Let me answer some questions that may help!

Q: Are there complicated and advanced poses in this class?
A: Nope. All the poses are ones you would find in a beginner's yoga class

Q: Do I need a lot of strength to join?
A: Nope. This class helps you build strength using your own body weight and (sometimes) light weights.

Q: Do I need to be super fit?
A: Nope. There is no expectation aside from doing what you can. All the exercises we do are accessible. The more reps you do, the harder it is.

Q: I have an injury or illness, can I still join?
A: Depends :) A lot of the exercises are adaptable, and you can work at your own pace. If you're unsure, feel free to ping me a message.

Q: Is it hard?
A: Yep. This class is designed to push you out of your comfort zone. You will get sweaty, your muscles will be burning. However, you are in charge of your own body and I NEVER push anyone beyond what they are ok with.

Q: What if I can't do all the reps in the class?
A: Fantastic! You can absolutely skip a round and take a rest. All it means is that you can't do all the reps YET.

Still not sure?
My Yoga Place is doing an intro pass where you get 3 classes for £20. Come check it out and if you don't like it, there's a whole host of other classes to try 🤗

Wait what? I don't want to fall on my face! It hurts! What about my glasses?

Valid points, but....

The reality is that if you are trying something new, you're not going to get it the first time you try.
So many of us put ourselves under pressure because we believe that we should aim for perfection every time.

Acceptance is a central theme in Mindfulness practice. We are learning that if we accept exactly what our experience is right now, we get to base our actions on what we truly need.

if you're trying to learn crow pose, put a cushion under your face so that when you inevitable do fall, it's funny, not painful

If you're practising meditation, remind yourself that you have the intention to meditate, so that when you inevitably get lost in thoughts, it's funny, not frustrating

If you're drawing, remember that making marks that feel good in the body is all that drawing is, so that when you end up with something that doesn't look hyper-realistic, it's still nourishing, not annoying
