Do your shoulders and neck get really stiff sitting at your computer?

Important question: Do you remember to stretch?

Here are some simple exercise suggestions, and note: you may feel some clonking and creaking, this is normal when your muscles are tight – if you do these slowly, and in as relaxed a way as possible, these sound effects should ease.

👉 Roll your shoulders SLOWLY in circles, both forwards (stretching between your shoulder blades) and backwards (stretching across your chest) – even a couple of times each way will make a difference. It’s better to finish by going backwards.

👍 Slowly turn your head and neck to look over your right shoulder, hold the pleasant stretch for a few seconds, then slowly back to the middle/neutral, and let it all settle for a moment; and then slowly turn your head and neck to look over your left shoulder for a few seconds. Do this a couple of times.

👉 Very slowly drop your head forward to feel a comfortable stretch (but no pain, if it’s hurting you’ve gone too far, and/or too fast), and then back to neutral. Just once is enough!

If in any doubt as to whether these movements are right for you, please ask me!

If there’s a chance to sing, seize it & relish every moment. GPs are prescribing singing instead of medication! https://buff.ly/3J6ySfD

Have you ever had that experience of going to the dentist, having an injection, and then feeling completely rubbish afterwards?

A quickie this time, prompted by a couple of patients having dental work recently and needing injections: Ask for an anaesthetic without adrenaline.

Also, if you are likely to be lying in the dentist’s chair for a while, it’s worth taking a small cushion to put behind your head – much more comfortable for your neck.

And if you do have toothache, clove oil (from a pharmacy) is good for gently numbing the pain until you can get it seen to.

These last few weeks, I have seen quite an assortment of aches and pains walking into my clinic, from lower backs and necks, elbows and knees to earaches and period pain.

And yet it’s the lives they are trying to live that matter.

- Keen gardeners who have been a tad overenthusiastic with raking and scarifying their lawns
- People training for the London Marathon who are keen to look after their bodies, so as to be in peak condition for the big day
- Young parents going through family dramas, needing cranial help to stay grounded and present
- Students consumed by anxiety learning to be curious, which is a much calmer inner place to be – and a better place for approaching their exams.
- And the first hay fever injuries of the season – sneezing at the wrong moment can cause havoc

Obviously, patient confidentiality is important when I share these vignettes, so I take care to not include personal information – unless of course with permission.

I have been working with some London Marathoners in the run-up to the big event.

Here’s a lovely testimonial from one of them, with their permission. Not only had they had regular treatments in the lead up to the day, they also had a session on the Monday, the day after.

Last time, several years ago and before our paths crossed, their hips were inflamed for about 6 months after the big run. This time, they are clearly much more comfortable.

It’s always a privilege to work with patients who have such dedication to these huge sporting challenges.

It’s that time of year when we are venturing out into our gardens.

I am a big fan of what I call Rotation Gardening – you have several jobs on the go: w**ding, neatening the edges of the lawn, potting up, pruning, shredding, scarifying etc. It is so tempting to say Now I’ll JUST w**d that border . . .

and 3 hours later you wonder why your back is aching.

So, take a kitchen timer that you can set to ping after say 10 or 15 minutes, and when it pings, you down tools and Change Jobs.

No argument, no dispute – I’ll JUST finish this bit – simply down tools and change jobs: your back will thank you for it.

That way we don’t get stuck into the same position, the same activity, the same potential muscle or ligament strain. All the jobs will still get done, just in a more piecemeal fashion. Believe me, this works!

And:

You may have heard me mention what I call Christina’s 3-Day Rule, namely:

Lots of aches and pains will settle down given 3 Days of TLC.

If something is still hurting after 3 Days, then get in touch on Day 4 and we can book you in for a check-up.

It is so much easier to fix things quickly, soon after they have happened.
Being a stoic for several weeks or months, hoping that it will miraculously get better on its own, is not helpful to your body!

Of course, if it’s obvious that you’ve done something nasty eg:

- you’ve had a prang in the car and have a growing assortment of aches and pains;
- you’ve fallen down the stairs on your bottom,
- you’ve whacked your head on the garage door,
- etc etc,
then get in touch sooner.

Text me or call me on 07535 350 343. I may be with a patient, so a text is best, and I can call you back to book you in.

Would you like to cut back on your caffeine intake? Here's a useful strategy that works whether you are using instant coffee or real coffee (ground or beans).

On the first day, use slightly less of full-leaded coffee, and a smidgeon of decaf coffee to make up the full amount. You won’t taste the difference, honest!

And each day gradually shift the balance of the two – after a week or two you reach half and half, a 1:1 ratio, and it tastes fine. Keep going, until it’s virtually all decaff with a soupcon of full leaded coffee.

And then it’s easy to go the whole way of decaffeinated.

The most robust decaff (real) coffees I have found are from Lidl, Morrisons, or Taylors of Harrogate.

Instant – try Clipper, Machu Picchu or Azeera.

Doing it slowly, you don’t get the crash and burn of withdrawal symptoms.

This worked well for me - hopefully it will for you too. Let me know how you get on!
